1. But most of the other songs are already played before (besides the new album of course).
Fans wanna see Acrobat, heartland, ect...

The problem is that what you (or I) consider to be an interesting setlist is different to what everyone else considers to be interesting so it becomes absurd to use that as an argument...

For the set list to be interesting, replacing songs which we've heard a million times with something else (e.g. from Pop, October, Zooropa....) would suffice (I know, shocking idea right). This is pretty much the general consensus.
You my friend are blinded by your fandom
  3. If I may, I think that is precisely our (hardcore) fandom that makes us hope for rarities after rarities that simply do not go with U2's past history. Everyone that is following their setlists from the 80's knows that they rely in 7-9 songs from their latest album (that later decrease or are replaced with new songs) and a fixed set of hits that the 80% of the public in concerts wants to hear. That's the reality, and that's what we're going to get. The new songs alone are reason enough to be excited for the next tour.

Well the fact that they included UV and TUF in 360 was enough. Just 2 or 3 rarities are enough, you can count Sweetest Thing as one of them but if I speak for myself it isn't really a song I would love to hear
  5. Yes, I'm expecting 2 rarities per show. I agree, Sweetest Thing is not in my top 50, but it'll be nice to hear it again. I still think we get the rarities, but with all these problems, accidents and tragic deaths, the band had the pressure of perfecting 1 set for opening night, even if that means "playing it safe".

That could be the case Zooropa and Even Better also took a long time before showing up.

There hasn't been any report about a choir or strings during that last rehearsal, right? Maybe that is something they keep hidden until opening night? Or have they dropped that idea?

Very nicely put! So excited to hear these new songs! Plus I always like the changes they put in some of the old war horses. I mean after seeing this band in concert over a dozen times I still get goosebumps when I hear rhe opening chords of WTSHNN!

Just a little over 24 hours till showtime!
  8. One step closer & Hands are a great addition!

That's the thing. There are already 8 (!) new songs !
A band like U2 has so many hits / great songs...
There isn't a lot of room for, let's say, 7 or 8 extra rarities or surprises.
  10. We'll agree to disagree in the end, and there's nothing wrong with it. Hopefully we'll both get to enjoy the whole bunch of bootlegs that are about to born in the next few months

Anyway, I know that we're starting to go in circles, but I'll try to explain my reasoning again:

According to you, but maybe not according to many other fans...

Who's "we" in this case? you're talking about a really small minority of hardcore u2 superfans who have attended multiple live shows or who have taken the trouble of downloading several bootlegs.
For the majority of fans, this doesn't apply.

we (as a whole u2start community, not as in you and me) wouldn't even agree on which songs are the best of those albums, much less all the fanbase.

consensus? among who? 100? 500? 1000? very hardcore people that spends their free time in U2 forums? 1000 people that are soooo hardcore fans that devote some time of their free time to bother thinking every week about what U2 should play or not in their concerts?
That's not a concensus... and even among that really small percentage of hardcore fans, we wouldn't agree on what should stay or what should leave.

mmh... I'm basically arguing from the point of view of casual fans, not from a hardcore fan, so I can't see how that could be translated into that I'm blinded by my fandom, but on the other hand I'm not sure if I really should feel offended by it, so...

    ---

[edit] (Maybe I should say/insist that my ideal setlist would be filled with lots of rarities, -Like a Song, Elvis Presley and America, Promenade, Acrobat, Fez, Exit, Spanish Eyes, Fallin at Your Feet, and Boy Falls From the Sky would be in it for sure... as well as Bad, 40 and Bullet, to name a few. I just think there's nothing wrong if they don't meet my demands, because I understand that those would be a hardcore fan demands and that would be totally unfair for the rest of the fans, that's all).

Wow after following U2 for over 30 years I still get goosebumps too when the screens go red & the Streets intro starts. Even when Streets starts on a bootleg. It's not my favourite U2 song but I always want it in the set

They also have rehearsed Playboy Mansion and One Step Closer, and we have no idea what they were rehearsing in France. I still hope we'll get to hear some nice surprises early in the tour.

I get the goosebumps when the intro starts and I imagine the red screens... but once the song starts it kind of gets into "meh" territory for me
