    We need them to travel international too. I just thought you didn't need them if you were travelling within the union...
  6. You don't really. I at least travelled to Lyon last summer and never had to show any ID at all to get there. The only ones who wanted to see my ID (not the passport), were the hotel.

  8. Airlines sometimes ask for ID/passport too (illegal but what can you do).
  9. They always ask for ID. They need to know if you are the person on boarding pass
  10. Exactly! - at least this is how it should be... (but, to be honest, I haven't flown within the Schengen part of the EU since Barcelona 2009...)

    (and as far as my itinerary is concerned, I need a pass for the UK because they are not part of Schengen...)

  12. Not always. I flew to and from Amsterdam the other day and didn't show my ID one single time.
