1. Good Morning Everyone,
My name is John. I'm 37 and have been a lifelong U2 fan. I currently teach Senior English/Humanities at Lancaster High School in Western New York. I've been doing this for about 10 years and I love it. A large part of my love for my job is my ability to intertwine music with literature and discussion. Which brings me to my need for assistance.

I've been searching hard to get a copy of the songs " Always" and "Are You Going To Wait Forever" I just finished the book U2 in theological perspective and would love to use them with my students. Can anyone help me out? My email is jefthemis@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance, let me know if I can return the kindness. I look forward to meeting new and passionate people.

    respect/peace

    john

PS If anyone else has b-sides or singles they feel would enhance the classroom please don't hesitate to suggest them and throw me a link. I'll let you know how they work out if you are interested.
  2. Hey John and welcome to the forums!
I'm Ali from Tehran, I already sent you a mail with some help.
I don't know what you're looking for exactly...for your class I mean, you might want to read some of the b-sides' lyrics here: http://www.u2start.com/songs/ (scroll down till you reach them)

the meanings of a few of them can be found here: http://www.muorji.se/U2MoL/index.html (under "Singles and other songs that are not on a named album.").
You might want to consider Lady With The Spinning Head, as it's quite a fan favorite round here, it's got nice lyrics as well...the music is a bit weird tho, maybe not the best for a classroom!

Glad to see that you love your job, not many do, so enjoy it!
    Enjoy your time around...
  3. cheers for the introduction. Glad to hear that you are taking a non conventional approach to teaching. Very interesting. I can help you out whenever I get the chance. Welcome
  4. Hello John!!
    Welcome to U2start!!
As Ali said before, It's very nice and rare to find someone hwo really enjoys his job work!!! and let me tell you, working with kids is one of the most gratifying things I've done, so I completely understand your joy!!!

regarding your request for help, there is something you should know, and that is the house rules of U2start.com I believe that what your asking is official material therefor can't be traded and requested through here.... either way someone might give you a hand with it, pm or email.

I would have killed to have a teacher who in order to teach me a lesson or a subject used U2 as an example!! I believe that there are A LOT of lyrics from many or most of the U2 songs that can help you give a great lesson to your kids!!
please feel free to ask about any specific subject!! I'll be more than happy to give you hand!!

    well, bit long post!! haha!!!
welcome, have a great time here!! it's a very nice place to meet great people who share the same love for the greatest band ever!!!
    cheers from Argentina!!
  5. Welcome!! I'd recommend Lady With The Spinning Head too...great song.
Enjoy it! Never heard of a teacher who plays U2 in classrooms..
  6. Hi John,

Good to see a fellow teacher on here. I spent my spring 2007 semester as a student teacher for seniors and sophomores in high school, and I used U2 in both classes. For my sophomores after we finished Catcher in the Rye, I had them listen to Summer Rain, a B-side to Beautiful Day. Most of the themes in Catcher--loss of innocence being the pimary one--were matched up really nicely in Bono's lyrics. My students really enjoyed it.

For my seniors I used All Along the Watchtower in a lesson on lyrical structure. I figured U2's semi-rocking version of it was right in betwen Dylan's and Hendrix's, so most kids in the class would enjoy lsitening to it, and they did.

I suppose it depends on which literature you're reading, but in terms of themes, anything from the Boy album is good for disillusionment and loss of innocence. Anything form The Unforgettable Fire, especially A Sort of Homecoming, I looked at in terms of man vs. nature. All That You Can't Leave Behind has great songs especially for seniors getting ready to take that "leap of faith" out into college (see "Kite").

That's somewhat general, but I hope it helps! Hope to see you again on the forums here!

    Nicole
  7. G'day John, excellent to see you here. No need to return the favor.

Except...let the students hear some great live stuff and take it home too. Grab the videos posted in the I Have A Vision section and keep participating. Great to see you're bringing U2 to your students - all we learnt in music was a few guitar rythyms and drumming solos.

considering I was in a hard line shia school...all we learned from music was that it's forbidden in Islam, which is a big ass lie!

Music forbidden in Islam? That's a bit rough isn't it?
