  1. Nice aftershow-periscope! Well done Tim
Good to hear Bono was on fire... Hope he keeps it up for another week at least

Also hoping for more guest star appearances... like Sir Mick on Stuck, or Sir Paul on... whatever!

  7. London Review

London 2. My first of the tour and first since Dublin 3 in 09'. It is late in the tour but I haven't felt that I have been missing much since starting the tour. See it as a combo of not digging the new album and the band not regularly playing much of the new material I actually like but sure.

First things first. I have an epic fail to declare. I got the train from Gatwick into central London. I had convinced myself so took no notice when the train stopped at Victoria. Imagine my horror as the train backed out of Victoria and headed back to Gatwick. Fucking idiot. It cost me 2 hours and put me on the back foot for most of the rest of the day (Remy was the ticket holder and god knows he loves his e-stage so I was worried about keeping him back). The GA queue was great. All very civil and subdued with a few new and faces We got into the arena and took up Remy's reserved golden throne just beside the steps Bono uses to get onto the stage.

So the show itself. I have very few complaints. I knew exactly what the setlist was going to be based on Night 1 and the sound checks we overheard. Although there was more than a tinge of inevitability I didn't much care. It was night 1 and what songs I didn't care for I could periscope so all good.

The opening 4 songs were great. Joey Ramone is still a bit hit and miss IMO but it starts the show. Then immediately into my all time hi-light with Out of Control. What a song. I couldn't help but bounce like a fangirl and belt out the words. It was also the first Boy song I've ever heard in person. Vertigo was grand but I would prefer it to switch places with I Will Follow to give us a Boy 1-2 punch but sure.

Irish and Song for Someone were absolutely perfect... . . . . . . .for giving me an opportunity to catch my breath for 10 minutes. Both as dull as a very dull thing but Larry and Adam carry Iris quite well between them. Otherwise meh. I disappointingly don't have much to say about Cedarwood. It didn't punch me in the chest like I expected it to and I couldn't see enough of the screen to take in the visuals. Maybe in Dublin...

Raised by Wolves is fantastic. Pure and simple. Just brilliant. The next rake of the show went by without much interest from me (including UTEOTW and Even Better). I can't really sat why but the band going up into the screen just didn't hit it off for me. It felt like going to visit someone in prison. Perhaps a better experience for those in the good seats? Invisible was anonymous. Sounded lovely but may as well have been pre-recorded considering there isn't much to see of the band. The crowd cheered towards the end when the screen blacks out to fully reveal the band. Failed concept.

Special mention to EBW. I still don't lie the arrangement but it was good to see Bono pouring himself into it from up close. His eyes were pointed up at the crowd but his head was buried in the song and wherever it is that it takes him every night. Quality stuff. Lovely final vocal to end it too. October fuck yea.

Bullet is a kick in the balls and the megaphone is absolutely fine. Again props to Adam and Larry. Pride was strong and so was WOWY for once. Bono had a go at actually singing it as opposed to just putting the words out there.

I goosebumped at Zooropa. I don't like the synths at all but ffs Bono is in front of you singing Zooropa and about to segue into Streets so shut the fuck up. Quality ending with Noel.

    Observations:

E-stage setlist was changed at the last minute. I couldn't see what was on there before but Larry was definitely expecting another song. He was very surprised to be told to get up so they could clear his gear.

Decent crowd. We had a good bunch around us in GA. The upper decks were all on their feet for large portions of the show. Even the suits in the the corporate boxes were giving it some.

The show is still too theatrical and staged. I thought the indoor setup would allow for a more gig like experience (which it did for the opening) but too much choreography afterwards.

Definitely a happy man though and looking forward to Belfast. I'll be rocking up as the doors are opening so I'm not exhausted from standing all day or dehydrated for the same reason.

    Hmm

I've probably spent a fair bit of energy hating U2 - it's fun and it's easy
Liked some old stuff years ago but no more than that
But someone got tickets Sunday and I went with the group for a night out

Never seen them live but I've got to admit this was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to in my 50 years including seeing Floyd , Bowie ,Peter Gabriel and many others I thought I rated so much higher
It wasn't just the sound (which uses some new style of speakers ) or the incredibly effective screen - it was the songs and some songs have such immense power it nearly floored me .. the one I hated sings with such majesty that basically I was wrong. Incidentally I was not drunk

Another thing that hit me was despite all the things he did that irritated me before , quite why me and so many people seemed to be putting energy into hating u2 more than Lucifer himself Tony Blair ,is a reflection on the spoiled society we live in today. Despite his irritating persona he is a good person and they are probably one of the greatest bands ever- never thought I would say that
Go if you get the chance .
  9. nice read Gerard!
    Remy's reserved golden throne.....

About Cedarwood and Invisible: it makes a lot of difference if you're in GA (and not seeing the screen in full) or watching from a distance. The visuals make them stunning performances I think.

I can only agree in the case of Cedarwood. Invisible following the fly intermission while behind the screen is still flawed I think

Either way, the screen can be both a prohibitive and an awesome spectacle depending on where you are positioned.
