    to say they're essentially the biggest band in the world, they aren't half an insecure bunch. they have nothing left to prove, they should just release music when they feel like it once it's done without the need for gimmicks.

    the whole "are we still relevant?" issue from the NLOTH days has gone from being kind of endearing to annoying. 5 years between each album is a ridiculous and unnatural waste of time.

    they need to remember that they're U2, and the world is going to listen regardless. it might not be another BD/Vertigo commercial success, but that doesn't negate the merit of their output.
  3. They don't need money. They have had their time in the spotlight and still are more relevant than a lot of bands that old.

    Plus, a lot of fans are obviously going to still listen to anything they release. However, it's possible that they "feel distant from their current material" like with Songs of Ascent.

    I get the spirit behind this statement, but I think it's downright irresponsible to disregard important aspects of marking, such as timing your release. If you want to know the importance of marketing your product, just look at the new Steve Jobs film. If you're thinking to yourself "there's a new Steve Jobs film?" you've proven to yourself why proper marking is critical. The film is slated to be nominated for several academy awards, including best actor and maybe best film, yet it was forced to withdraw from a huge majority of theaters because of it's poor profit margins. Many people will attribute this to the fact that the team spent $0 on marketing, expecting the quality of the movie to carry itself in the Box Office.

  6. They could learn a lot from how David Bowie has been releasing work the past few years...he's doing things when he wants to and and how he wants to and is just blowing everyone away, fans and music critics alike.

    As a fan, I'd love if they did something like this.

    On the other hand, it's not something they could "learn". It's different goals and purposes in life. For what we know about U2, they're a lot more interested into getting their ideas/songs to as many people as possible, than to just get their ideas/songs out there.

    They have different visions on music than other artists.
    As a fan I find that annoying, but understandable. And for more annoying that I find it, their way it works... I mean, here we are after all those years... who knows if it had worked the same if they'd done it differently.
  8. Well if they get cold feet again and delay SOE they could just re-release POP and tour with that album . I mean they only spent the last 15 years burying it so the general public wouldn't know the difference and I bet most fans would love it .

    Seriously though, I hope they finish SOE and release it within the next 12 months. I feel like that would set in place a better rhythm for the future: shorter and smaller production tours with more frequent albums.
    The 360 tour was great to see but it was just such a huge production and commitment they must have come off of it exhausted and needing a break from touring.

    On the plus side 360 and Bono's back problems allowed us to see them in 2009, 2010 and 2011. That was a first for me. My longest gap was 87 till 93 which was desperately long at the time. (92 was very difficult to get tix)

    Bono & Edge on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria, GPS"

    Bono is writing a new song called "The Streets Of Surrender," but it may never appear on a U2 release. Bono tells CNN's Fareed Zakaria that he's working on the song for the Italian singer Zucchero. He talks about the song when Zakaria asks if the terrorist attacks in Paris will inspire a new album or song, and Bono recites these lyrics:

    Let's be real though. They would re-release HTDAAB long before Pop.
