  1. I hate covers when they get airplay...

    If you cover a song live, that's 100% awesome, a great homage for an artist. You can butcher it and I don't mind at all.
    If you cover a song for a b-side, the same, you're saying to the world that you really love that artist. Please do it.
    If you cover a song as a filler for your album, well, you seem to lack a bit of creativity, but no much harm done.
    But if you cover a song and release it as a single, then fckoff. You're not honoring the original artist, you're disrespecting them.

    ...in other words, I would hate if Adele/any popstar covers x U2 song and it becomes a hit and/or while people just ignores U2 and start referring to it as Adele's.
  2. having another artist record your song is a great source of revenue for the writer of the song or songs.it is also a great way for a younger generation to be introduced to an older artist.

  3. It depends on how they do it.
    Some artists just try to do it exactly like the original artist. That often kinda blows.
    Others give their own interpretation, a whole new arrangement, and can lead to greatness. Eg Hurt by Johnny Cash.
    + I think Adele's voice might suit the song better than Bono's... Yes, it saddens me to say that.

    Also agreed with popper. Adele might actually lead people to U2... And give them even more moneeeey (Paulie McG is listening).
  4. money wise, yes, it's interesting and profitable having a popular artist to cover one of your songs.

    But, I really don't think it leads nobody to the original artist.

    It'll be a lot easier to hear someone saying "hey, that's the Adele song" when listening to U2's version (followed by a "well, but Adele's version is a lot better!"), than to hear someone saying "I find U2 after finding out that this Adele song was actually a U2 song, I was hooked from then".

    Again, if someone makes a cover live or in a b-side, yes, it may lead someone to find the original version, but when it's covered as a single... you get a bunch of idiots teenagers singing One Way or Another not having a clue of who Blondie is...

    If we're talking about revenue, yes, great idea.
    If we're talking about "it'll be interesting to hear x cover x song", probably yes, just do it live or as a b-side (or even album fodder), but I know I'll hate hearing people thinking the cover is the real version.

    Love is Blindness is a good exemple.... I know a lot of people that get to know this song because the version made by Jack White, when I tell then that it is U2 they don't believe it, it's disapointing....

    Yep. I don't even particularly like his version, there's no emotion at all in it. Goes to show covers aren't usually quite as great as the original anyway, though it's still a good tribute at times. "All Along The Watchtower" was very criticized if I remember correctly.

  12. There was an interview with Jack White after he released that version of Love Is Blindness, and he said that the emotions The Edge went through when recording the song was similar to himself. They both went through divorces. I'd say it is just as powerful and desperate.
