I wonder, have our general opinions of it improved in the time since it's been released? I seem to remember a bit more resistance/criticism of it when it was only a couple of weeks/months old
I remember the criticism as well, but I don't think it was directed towards the album itself and more towards the method of release (free via itunes).

When I downloaded SOI after the Apple event, it was probably one of the greatest things I've heard. I had it on repeat for pretty much the next month. After the high of getting a new U2 album wore off, it felt like a top 3 album to me. What carries the album in my mind is the fact it is U2 presented in their most accessible form (not talking about distribution, but that certainly helps). For example, I can play this album to my friends who have heard of U2 but wouldn't call themselves fans and there would be at least a few songs on the album they like. Also, the fact they released acoustic versions that sound quite unique is another plus.

  7. Hmm, tough choice. My number one album used to be Achtung Baby, but for some reason I'm now finding the Joshua Tree album more appealing. I think for me it depends on what mood I'm feeling and what wave of music I'm into. Also, the whole ZooTV era is starting to fade a bit for me (which was the big appeal to me for Achtung Baby), mainly because U2 have finally outdone themselves with the last two tours.

    So here's my list:

    The Joshua Tree
    Achtung Baby
All That You Can't Leave Behind
    The Unforgettable Fire
    Zooropa
    Songs of Innocence
    Pop
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
    Rattle and Hum
    Boy
    War
    No Line on the Horizon
    October
  8. Achtung Baby

    The Joshua Tree

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
    NLOTH
    Tuf

All That You Can't Leave Behind
    Songs of Innocence

    Pop
    Rattle and Hum
    Boy
    War
    Zooropa

Absolutely agree depends on my mood as pretty much the top half changes on a weekly basis
  11. Achtung Baby
    Pop
    The Joshua Tree
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
    Songs of Innocence
    Boy
    All You Can't Leave Behind
    No Line on the Horizon

    Zooropa
    October
    The Unforgettable Fire
    Rattle and Hum

this is very difficult....I could do a completely different list. I just kinda like almost everything....Unforgettable Fire next to last?....I love that album....Rattle and Hum last?....I could listen to God part 2 all night long and SHFWILF with the Soweto choir is awesome...you might just as well write all the names on scraps of paper and just list them as you pick em.....I know lots of people think they are not as good as the old days....I didn't love them until Achtung Baby, so I enjoy their later stuff much more than some of you that have been fans since day one

Hearing The Electric Co., Out of Control, I Will Follow, Gloria, and October for the first time and having them as regulars on the tour has really piqued my interest in Boy and October again.
    My ranking is essentially this:

    1. 1990's U2
    2. 1980's U2
    3. 2010's U2
    4. 2000's U2
