1. Saw it now, too (managed to get smuggled into a press presentation).

It's pretty good, but don't expect the reinvention of cinema they promised you.

The 3D effects are great, but hardly used. Mostly they're used to show distance/perspective.
The directing wasn't very good overall. I had the impression that I missed interesting moments because the cameras caught something else. Also, major parts aren't filmed from the front but the side. The cuts/effects to get from one song to the next are horrible, every amateur with a camcorder can do better. Everyone who bashed Hamish Hamilton and praised Catherine Owens should apologize.
The great crowd is barely audible (with some exceptions). The band's performance isn't really passionate, they just do what they get paid for. But that's something we knew already from the DVD.

At the end of the day, the movie is pretty cool but nothing you should loose sleep over, you get some amazing Larry shots, during some moments you really feel like you can touch Bono. The 3D effects are really cool during Love and Peace and The Fly but there are also the negative points I mentioned.

I'll have to watch it again in a cinema packed with U2 fans, but for now it's a 7/10 in my book.

  2. Do a search on YouTube for U2uben and find some stuff there.

    Note: Spoilers guaranteed.

Based on the way that review was going, I was expecting a 3/10...
  4. My review. I'll mark it 7/10 first of all.

Not to be negative but I want to get the annoying parts out of the way first. The cinema screened a Hannah Montanna preview before U2:3D started. What a fucking idiotic move. I wanted to be amazed straight away by U2, I didn't want no preview of the 3D image from Hannah Montanna. That seriously fucked me off. Second of all, some of the direction and editing was brutal at best. I agree with Yeah about the fact that if you have ever bad mouthed Hamish then you have to do the same with Catherine. The whole thing is fade in/fade out. The movie never switches from one shot to another, it is ALL tacky amateur fades. At one stage I counted 4 different faded images on screen (and that in 3D is terrible). I also have to moan about the sound (specifically some of Bono's vocals). Some of them must have been recorded and dubbed in (badly) after filming. Listen to 'Wipe your tears away' and pretty much all of Streets to hear for yourself. I also don't think that the 3D element was exploited enough either. Last thing was that some items on stage were just wayyy to 3D. Edges mic stand was right infront of your face anytime it was on screen whilst Edge just appeared 2D. Shit thats a lot of negativity.

EDIT : I have to put this piece of shocking editing in bold. There is a fade shot of Bono during WOWY (you see 2 Bono's on screen, different angles of the same shot) but in one of them Bono is standing still and in the other he is walking backwards. WTF Catherine!! That single cock up is worse than anything Hamish has ever did

Positives, ahh there was plenty. First off, it's bloody awesome to see anything of U2 on a screen of that size. The overall image quality is just stunning. If you could freeze frame one of the crowd shots you would be able to count each of the 80,000 heads in the stadium. Larry's drum shots just left me breathless. You just have to see the movie to believe some of the shots, you will just laugh in disbelief at the overall quality.

    Highlights :

-That opening shot of Larry at his throne from behind the screen
-All close ups of Bono and anything including Larrys drums.
-Love and Peace + Sunday Bloody Sunday. Those shots of Larry looking back at Bono from the B-stage are just wow. Likewise with the b-stage to b-stage views.
-The silence of the human rights part being ripped apart by the explosion of the opening bars of Pride.
-All of The Fly (including the technical hitch)
-Yahweh live at the end with zero crowd noise. Lovely

Nah 8/10 and going to see it next week again at a different cinema. I don't think the cinema I was in had a big enough screen.
