I remember Bono saying that Wake Up Dead Man was written more from the perspective of friends who had lost faith, but overall I agree with you. I think there's personal songs on No Line, too, or at least personal references (Magnificent, I'll Go Crazy, SUC, Breathe), so I guess the comparison partially works but doesn't hold completely if the reason they abandoned NLOTH and Pop was for lack of personality/heart.
