  1. I remember Bono saying that Wake Up Dead Man was written more from the perspective of friends who had lost faith, but overall I agree with you. I think there's personal songs on No Line, too, or at least personal references (Magnificent, I'll Go Crazy, SUC, Breathe), so I guess the comparison partially works but doesn't hold completely if the reason they abandoned NLOTH and Pop was for lack of personality/heart.

    Yeah....great songs and i love to hear them played live.
  3. These songs hold up to me much more than SOI. I'm almost bored with SOI at this point, and I still find myself going back to Breathe, Magnificent, and NLOTH all this time later. I still can't stomach the vocals on most of Unknown Caller...they just sound so corny and stale with the "Shush now." But most I know love that one. A solid album, but not quite on par with the ones before it...but let's face it, for the later part of their career, it's pretty good stuff.

  7. I actually enjoy NLOTH a lot! There are really great songs there! Like MoS, NLOTH, Magnificent, Breathe, Unkonown Caller etc. And I would still really, really love to hear White as Snow live someday...
  8. Time has gone so quickly since this release,i remember thinking it was a crap album upon first listen,the build up to its release was billed as the best album weve ever written,its just seemed slow and not as rock n roll as i was expecting.
    Its without doubt a grower and i look back fondly on this record,apart from boots,snow its a great album and the tour amazing.
    For me MoS was the perfect closer on the tour with the crowd singing the band off,reminded me alot of "40".
    Ranked 6th or 7th in my list.

  10. Magnificent and Stand Up Comedy will always be my favorite songs on the record, I love No Line live and the Crazy remix too
  11. I love No Line. I had forgotten how brilliant it is in places. CoL might be my favorite album closer out of any of U2's albums. Magnificent, UC, and MoS have always been uplifting for me personally.

    I have soft spots for Stand Up Comedy and Boots, too, though GOYB is actually the very first song i heard by U2 and the reason I explored them to begin with. The things I'd do to hear some demos or sessions from No Line...
  12. No Line does have some excellent songs, especially "Moment of Surrender." There has been some speculation about what the song is about. A lot of people think it's the story of a drug addict hitting rock bottom and finally asking for the help he needs, possibly from God. I'm sure there's an old thread about MOS somewhere where all the possible interpretations were discussed.

    I also have a soft spot for "Magnificent." Now there is an uplifting, joyful and spiritual song in the classic U2 tradition. Maybe if they had picked it as the first single it would be much better known now, and who knows, maybe the album itself would have made more of an impact. First singles can be critical. I always thought Every Breaking Wave (or maybe even The Troubles) would have made a better first single from SOI than The Miracle, but that could be a discussion topic of it's own and probably has been! Breathe is another favorite from NLOTH. I love the energy of that track!
