There are a lot of Americans who liked U2 being teens/young adults back in the 80s and liking their music (and often their Christian connections) who are like 'well Bono needs to shut up about politics' and I just think, 'did you LISTEN to War or The Joshua Tree, those records you seem to think are so great?' They're not subtle. This is especially true for Bullet and why I loved this performance so much: the Trump thing fit exactly into the original theme of the song - conservative, militaristic America fucks up the rest of the world. The song has always been anti-conflict but was especially anti-conservatism/reactionary: anti-Reagan originally, anti-Fascist on ZooTV, pro-gun control on Elevation. That song has always been against what Donald Trump is, and what his 'America' would be.
So frankly, I could not be more proud of my band than I am right now for what they did onstage last night.
If you liked U2 in the 80s but are mad about their politics, you never understood them. That doesn't mean you have to agree with their stances, but good God, they've been like this since the early years... 'A message to the President!' before Seconds? Remember that? I, for one, am happy to see the band - and Bono especially - getting their balls back. Bono's talk about compromise is great. It really, really is, it's his most important point, really. But it's so good to see them - after about 16 or 17 years of being pretty inoffensive in their politicking, mostly promoting charities and such - ready to take a strong, unapologetic stance in favour of what they believe.
And if that's too much for all my whiny fellow Americans mad that the band they liked so much back in college are out of line in criticising American politics... well, those people can fuck right off. That, onstage last night, was U2. That was heart and soul of this band. And that is one of the many reasons I, for one, am proud as hell to say that they are by far my favourite band.
Sorry for the long rant, but that's just my feelings right now.

Last time Bono did this sort of thing was against George HW Bush...which led to Bill Clinton being elected. Does he do this stuff only when a Clinton is involved?

Trump represents a huge problem but so does the otherside. As an American how can you call out one side without calling out the other. The current administration has killed more innocent people through drone strikes than any other administration. So why arent they railing against both sides and calling them both out? My guess is because their friends with the other side. In the 80s and half of the 90s they were weary of politicians as Bono used to talk about politicia s trying to shake his hand to get that photo op for their campaign. Now he calls them friends and calls out their name from the stage like Nancy Pelosi who is a freakin tard and celeb politician

Have to say, similar thoughts have crossed my mind and am therefore not too sure about the recent Trump stuff.
I like that they are politically active again, but, makes it all too weird with his close collaboration and friendship with the Clinton foundation and the Clintons. When he did this stuff in ZooTV it was just him speaking out against the current administration, not even directly involved in the elections, and not seeming like he's supporting his friends/collaborators.
