  1. OK. Does anybody remember the interview(s) where Bono admitted that the band played two Ramones songs when a "famous Hollywood" director came to their school to see them practice? The band apparently could not agree on any parts of the songs and so when this director came, they played two Ramones songs and admitted to writing them themselves. This apparently got them their first TV break. I heard this interview back in 2000 when they did an interview with Matt Pinfield and Kane from KROQ.

    Here has been the concern; this is partially me playing devil's advocate, but the thought that has been plaguing me is would U2 have gone on the way they did had they not lied to get on television? I'm not sure exactly what performance this was, maybe the one where they played Street Mission? For the past two days, while listening to them, something in my mind goes, "this is all based on a lie". Do you think they would have met Paul McGuinness were it not for this publicity? I can't recall if this was before or after the Limerick talent contest (I'm in college and left all my U2 books at home, a terrible decision).

    I think the decision for this post is to reassure myself that these ideas are full of shit and that U2 would have gone on despite this. Anybody agree? disagree? see where I'm coming from?
  2. who cares man. They were cunning and made the most of the situation were in and look where it's landed them. I wouldn't care if they'd held the TV producers up at gunpoint until they put them on screen. It worked and here we are.
  3. suppose so. it really isn't something i'm taking seriously, but it's like some kind of devil is whispering on my shoulder trying to fuck with me. like I said I heard this 8 years ago and it kinda made me think then but then I dropped it and then all of a sudden it crept back in.

    yeh it is...not sure what page...one of the first few pages though..first chapter..the early years...the band talks about it in detail!


    I agree...they were clever and quick enough to think of covering 2 songs that they knew they could play well. If they hadn't of lied i still think everything wouldve happened the way it did. It wouldn't be the same world if it weren't for the music that U2 makes and has made in the past! Think of how many people their music has touched.

I think myself that if, U2 hadn't had the talent back then, althought ithey might, or might not have been an unpolished performer, they would not be where they r today, i mean you have heard of one hit wonders, they make one song or sing one song be it theirs or someone elses, and then try to do it again and the song or music doesnt sell because they dont have the talent to back it up,or to go along with a long career, apparently u2 had that from the beginning or they would'nt still be a relevent force in the music business now.
  8. I think that...considering the Ramones don't have a problem with them having done that (I mean...what would Joey Ramone listen to on his death bed?!)...and also considering the producer has been stupid enough to buy that...I say it's ok what they did..

    and they would get the break anyway, maybe a couple of years later tho...we would be getting HTDAAB this october instead of the new album

  10. Every band has done similar things. Led Zeppelin around 1980 said that many, many songs were their owns, and they were not. Also The Beatles and Pink Floyd had some problems about this stuff I think. Who cares?? U2 has become much, much, muuuuuch biger than The Ramones, so... ?
  11. I remember seeing Natalie Umbruglio Being interviewed about her single "Torn" and she was happy to pretend that she had written it. A couple of weeks later I saw the original version which basically was exactly the same as hers-but this was from the sixties and she obviously wasn' t even born then. It really bugged me that she had lied barefaced on Live TV to he world...but now Im older, I think, somehow, she didn't feel she was lying, She could have had no concept about the corruptness of the system -when it comes to plagarism and the media. It always comes out in the wash and that's where the problems start if you do tell porky pies.
