1. nice post dude!!! good luck with exams. Just out of curiosity. I know many vets (not in New Zealand, although I can't imagine it being any different haha). And all of them differ on 1 topic. Some say dogs are animals and you need to treat them like that and some say that you need to treat them like humans. I've had some great debates over some whiskey and cigars and I was just wondering what your take is. I have a german shepherd at home in New Jersey and he's my best friend and brother!

    Thanks mate,
Wow thats a curious topic to talk about, ive never really though about it till now, so here are my first intial thoughts..
(You should ask Mr. Vet man Dan too here on U2start (djrlewis) he might have an opinion on it aswell being an actual Vet )
Um, i have a miniature schnauzer and like you she is my best friend but there are boundries on what you got to let them do you know? Dogs, like wolves there is a hierarchy to them, they need domninance and i guess if you can control that from a pup, be the dominant one in the relationship then you can treat him in which ever way you want, he will respect you. but when you say treated like an animal? to some extent yes they need to be or they will just be unruly, but dogs arent just a dumb animal and treating them like a human wouldnt hurt them either but you got to have a mixture of both i guess, its so hard i really dont know with this one im on the fence lol

    whats your opinion?

Right now your my mentor and i've listened to your words. haha, its not that i like to study its i HAVE to study, the vet course is very competitive here, about 300 students apply and only 120 are ALLOWED to get in (25% have to be foriegn students and a further more have to be 2nd attempt students) so my chances are VERY slim, but i will go to the courts tonight and relax, i just have to manage my fun sadly for the first 6 months
Once i'm in though, i will not be studyin in weekends thats for sure

Good luck with your work Dan, tell me if you have any interesting cases this weekend! heard your on call? (i also read general chat hehe)
But i want more of your advice more often okay? haha

Seems like a good system this 6-month trial (presuming you get through of course ). Here it's all based on exam results at school before you even get to Uni.
What criteria do they use during this 6 months to pick you? I assume you have practical experience like going on farms / stables / seeing work experience at a vets. That always help over here.

Interesting cases? Well, today I have treated a cow with mastitis, 2 calves with navel ill, calved a suckler beef cow who then promptly prolapsed her uterus so I then had to put that back in too. Had to go straight to that to a cow with milk fever (what would I do to treat that then?.....). Short break then a lambing with triplets that sadly were dead but had to come out anyway.
It's now 11.26pm and I'm knackered and hoping the phone doesn't go again before morning! I'll keep you informed if it does .....

More advice? Be conscientious, get all your work in on time, pass the exams and practice any practical stuff they expect you to be able to do until you can do it with your eyes shut (eg tying suture material). The rest I think you have covered (polite, personable etc...).

    spot on the money

Times / Ways it's appropriate to treat them like humans:-

Keep them in the house, cuddles, fuss, play. Set routine like you may have with kids.

Times they need to be treated like animals

Dogs are dogs. They are not people. This means they need dog food (preferably dry) and not bits off your plate, scraps, biscuits etc.
They also are not capable of being deliberately naughty like a human, so don't treat them like they are. Ignore any undesirable behaviour otherwise you're giving them attention for doing something you don't want. Praise any behaviour you do want (eg sitting).
Go through doors before them, don't let them sleep on yourbed, onlylet them jump up at you or onto sofas etc when they are told they can.

So, Jordan. As Nikki says - bit of both.
  8. okay as this is turning into a vet topic heres a query for you Dan. Simple solution to a dog shedding its hair everywhere. All the vetinary treatments seem quite expensive and the only other solution i've heard is to stick a little olive oil in with the dog food. Would that be right?

Because to replicate in words the hour of hard labour, sweat and blood would be impossible
Not to mention the tarpaulin used to keep it off the straw, the ropes and heft needed to get her into the right position; the epidural anaesthesia, the one and half bottles of lubricant gel............

It depends on the reason for the shedding (more on that in a second), but oils can be useful in keeping a coat glossy and healthy. Evening primrose is actually better than olive for this purpose.

Hair will shed generally for 4 reasons:-
    1. Moult - nowadays a year-round problem as hot temps in summer make them moult and central heating in the winter makes them moult. In this case the hair loss would be full hairs (not brittle or barbed) and not itchy.

    2. Allergies - to pretty much anything. Usually associated with intense scratching and itchiness; possibly including redness. Often a process of exclusion, but this one will need a vet to a certain extent, at least to start with.

    3. Parasites - most commonly fleas, but there are others. Topical spot-on products will sort most of this but the best are only available through us. Itchy, but not usually as much as allergy

    4. Hormonal disorder (I don't mean sex hormones). This one definitely needs a vet as will need a blood test. Usually other symptoms to look for too and not itchy.

Does this help or confuse matters?.....!
