    Dogs are dogs. They are not people. This means they need dog food (preferably dry) and not bits off your plate, scraps, biscuits etc.
    They also are not capable of being deliberately naughty like a human, so don't treat them like they are. Ignore any undesirable behaviour otherwise you're giving them attention for doing something you don't want. Praise any behaviour you do want (eg sitting).
    Go through doors before them, don't let them sleep on yourbed, onlylet them jump up at you or onto sofas etc when they are told they can.

    Dead right!!.. thats why a vets job is so much harder then a doctor, we have to figure out whats wrong, we dont get told lol!

    You know I've actually seen a dog collar on tv that "translates" their barks. What a load of crap.

    I know i never fully introduced myself and i know im not on often, its becoming more and more rare as uni starts to kick in but i thought this might be the perfect occasion to give it a try.
    My name is Nikki (Edit: i forgot this bit when i first posted haha) I live in the wonderful little country of New Zealand, im a twin and discovered the beauty of U2's music a little over a year ago. Their music helped me get through a tough stage of my life, especially when my twin sister got sick and i felt so helpless, U2's music lifted me up and also helped her through it and now everything is better then it has ever been!
    Without the power of music and the inspiration it gives, i couldn't survive, people argue bout religion, but my religion is music and every part of it is accepted, theres nothing to argue about.
    so thats the formal introduction of me..

    Now just some interests im a huge fan of Basketball, played for the New Zealand U18 Koru's Women team last year, but then had surgery so had to have a break for a year, but now that year is now over and im finally back into it! Another big passion of mine is surf life saving, recently qualified and out there saving lives (well not yet but maybe one day i will) I do surf boat rowing for the club and my gosh its the best sport i have even done! Such a thrill! Dont know what it is? Search surf boat carnage in youtube and you'll soon find out thats the reason i got into surf club, Us boaties are a species of our own.
    But now finally ive finished high school and am starting study in BcVS, Bachleor of Vet Science, its a competitive course and ive got 6 months to prove ive got what it takes to get in, wish me luck everyone its my passion! Just finished O-week and yea got a bit wild!

    But finally i just want to say a final big thanks to Remy, Gerard, Nate, Aidan, Dan, MWSAH and LikeaSong you were the first people i really talked to and control this site, making it what it is, prefection! i really thank you for it!
    Hope everyone carries on using this site and it grows bigger and bigger!

    Aww thank you Can't say i have sadly just the aussies across the ditch, had surgery on my knee so didnt get to play the whole season

    Um, i have a miniature schnauzer and like you she is my best friend but there are boundries on what you got to let them do you know? Dogs, like wolves there is a hierarchy to them, they need domninance and i guess if you can control that from a pup, be the dominant one in the relationship then you can treat him in which ever way you want, he will respect you. but when you say treated like an animal? to some extent yes they need to be or they will just be unruly, but dogs arent just a dumb animal and treating them like a human wouldnt hurt them either but you got to have a mixture of both i guess, its so hard i really dont know with this one im on the fence lol

    I agree with you actually. Dogs are humans to an extent but they are dogs. They need to be trained from being puppies that WE are the alpha figure. Once we lose that, I think the dogs try to replace us. Its happened with my family at one point. Once Jagger (my shepherd) turned about 1 he really started to disobey and started doing his own thing, showing to us that he could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted. So, we just got a few tips and got the whole family to consistently train with him. After a few days, he was obedient again with my father and I and disobedient with my mother and sister. It has nothing to do with male/female. Its just that my dad and I were actually strict with him where my mom and sis were pushovers and didn't hold their ground. I don't even think they really trained with him. And hes 6 now and still like that with them. But yes, I think they do need dominance!
