  1. I know it's origin. Why publish such nonsense? The emperor has no clothes. That poem sucks. There are thousands of poems more fitting and respectful. Bono's calls for mutual respect are lost in this garbage.
  2. Outside it's America...

Actually, given the history of white missionaries using scripture to essential push a colonial agenda, this poem is quite fitting. Often times preachers in countries like Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines were white and preached a version of the gospel that marketed western society as God's chosen people. The current political climate draws immense parallels to this and basically every poem that was displayed. Bono knows exactly what he's talking about.

If Bono wants to make a bold statement, he should advocate wiping ones arse with the Koran. It is currently being used (not 200 years ago) to justify the killing of gays and subjugation of woman throughout the world. There is no indication in Pietre's poem he was referencing "white preachers" preaching white racial superiority in foreign lands. That is excuse-making for very bad poetry.
  5. I know. Wasn't IWF on the stelist?

Whether or not its "bad poetry" is a highly subjective matter, but I guess the trouble with both the Bible and the Koran is that there are always people who use these texts in order to justify very terrible things.
Then, as a reaction from the victims, not only the wrong doing people are hated, but also these books that were held in defense of the injustments. And, as such, books like the Bible and the Koran have become part of the battle while this is not entirely fair with respect to these books.
So, with this in mind, I can understand the sentiment, but I also see that there is a context where the toilet paper analogy is coming from. And in all fairness, I don't think it is actually Bono's - or U2's - take on things to take just this one thing and put it on display without it's proper context.

However, if the analogy had been applied to that other book, I'm sure it would have caused much more commotion.
And if this is more or less your point, then I must agree with you.
  8. Axl Rose was there last night apparently.
