Windmill Lane Studios the enterprise still exists, but it's not on Windmill Lane anymore.
I never bought the "Mandela" excuse. This is a band that seems to think it is required to follow the Album, Tour, long vacation, try to write some songs, do an album, tour again...cycle. When you are 20-35, you can get away with it, but age creeps in, and it is hard to get back on the train again. It is scary how many songs from the vault they have held on to hoping to somehow make a great song out of a mediocre outtake.
You don't go "try" to write some songs. I am a songwriter, and I have made that mistake, and it works sometimes, but the only process that works well, is to always think of yourself as a songwriter, and keep being creative. I have probably banged this point a few billion times on here, but I know part of their life is exhausting with all the travel. For their sake, I think multiple shows in the same city will save their energy, but for songwriting, they are probably too stuck in this habit of thinking they can turn the switch on.
If I could go back in time and talk to them, there is not much I would tell them to do differently other than spending more time on songwriting. I used to keep paper and a voice recorder on me at all times, which now my phone does, but when an idea hits, I don't screw it up, or wait until it is "time" to write, I just do it.
Maybe they already do this, but it seems they don't ha.
