If these songs came from a regular band and I'd hear it on the radio I might like them for a few listens.
Coming from U2, it's all very disappointing.

Some of us hold music in a higher regard, and U2 to a higher standard than that, I'm afraid. The standard was set by them and continues to be when they discuss their music, that's why it's hard for me. It's hard for me to hear Bono say that they better have a great fucking album after showing everyone Joshua Tree again, and then...songs like this.

I'm playing Super Mario Odyssey because it makes me happy, but there are other video games that have a lot more meaning to them with a lot more to say than Super Mario. Do both have their place? Yes. But this is like one of those deeper games suddenly putting out a sequel that's a lot like Super Mario. I'm left thinking "yeah this might be fun, but where's all the greatness of the previous stuff?"

Maybe, but only to sum up that entire era with one simple catch-all phrase, not to use as a lyric. If "looking for American Soul" was a lyric on the Joshua Tree it'd be laughed at in comparison to the rest that are on it.

Now you're just quoting things out of context! Not to mention that, that particular phrase is a comment on how "looking for soul" was naive and and misplaced. It's a neat thing to bring that up in conjunction with these lyrics, but I don't know. I just can't get into it.
See I think what they are doing is smart. They are making fairly simple songs that are melodic and can get stuck in your head. They are melodic but they have heart. They sound personal but they also sound political.

For better or worse, that is what most music is now. It isn't too complex (I suspect because people will so quickly turn to the newest new song) because a song needs to hook you rather quickly.

I'm like what I'm hearing so far and looking forward to more exploration of the personal meets political.

Cause if this is songs of EXPERIENCE and is the adult Bono he is the personal meeting the political.

  5. It's funny... reading through this thread reminds me of the old politics thread before the election. argue, debate, opinion... hopefully it doesn't get as nasty and denigrating... but at the end of the day, nobody is going to change their minds or opinions (until maybe the tour starts and everybody has digested the full album anyway...) I'll reserve judgement because so many times in the past a new U2 song has started out lukewarm to me and has grown and grown as time went by...

I expect the quality that they've promised us in countless interviews and previews of this album. If this is the case, they should come out and say "what do you expect from us, we're doing it for fun". But they're not. They've continuously stated the opposite, and maybe they shouldn't be.

And I just can't agree with that last part. They aren't still making better music than most of the artists these days. Can you and might you like it better? Of course that's your prerogative, and I'm sure you're not the only one. But to say that this is somehow better than most other stuff coming out right now just isn't true IMO, not anymore.

I hate to say "thanks for agreeing" with me, because I hate the point that we're agreeing on, but I agree with what you've said too.

You're certainly not wrong, but songs are made that way now because that's the easiest way to grab the limelight. U2 has the limelight, their album releases are always big news with music publications and radio stations, so they don't need to do that.

It reminds me of how Brian Eno wanted them to go with Moment of Surrender as the first single because he thought it would've been a really artistically ambitious move. Instead they chose Boots. That's a pretty good metaphor for the kinds of decisions U2 continue to make these days.

Could it be the experienced side of Bono has learned (as most of us try do as we age, is to try to lighten up our lives and simplify, while still (as much as we'd like to) not forgetting the issues in the world around us? They are still a focus, but other things become more important. Family. Friends. Who knows. Just sayin', wile I wasn't gonna say anything. I felt this was worthy of a comment, because it's so right!
