    This is the song I've least warmed up to so far still. I think it's just terrible. Like another attempt at a standard rock banger for U2, but somehow even worse by them trying to give a serious/political context to it. And I don't mean that as a bad thing, I mean that as in it's done so damn poorly. I still can't believe the chorus lyrics are what they are. Again, I don't understand how Bono could criticize songs like Bad and Streets and write this chorus. Not even just the "you are rock and roll part" (which I still consider to be an abysmal "Bono-ism" that's nothing more than perfect ammunition for the haters), but rhyming that and even just writing "came here looking for American soul". Not to mention while the verses (the part that was sampled by Kendrick) have a decent rhyme, it's still very much a surface way of expressing that notion that we've heard Bono express fucking COUNTLESS times already. It's like every interview Bono has given since U2 started should've come with a spoiler tag for this song because it's just shit we've heard Bono say already, numerous times.

    I just can't stand it, and I wish I liked it as much as many of you guys are seeming to. I've definitely warmed up to Get out of Your Own Way a bit, and I do think Blackout is pretty cool, Best Thing is meh (Kygo version is decent), but this song...I hope this is the stinker of the album and there isn't anything else that I dislike this much. It's like the Wild Honey of the album, except I know this is going to be a part of the live show.

    Gotta wonder if this song existed before the whole "Trump won, let's go back and change shit on our album" thing. Anyone know? It wouldn't surprise me to find out that this song was a last-minute addition. Sorry to be so over-the-top negative, I just feel so strongly about this! Guess that means I care...

    Haven't disliked a U2 song this much since Stand Up Comedy. In fact, I'd say Stand Up Comedy is better than this song, and THAT'S saying something.


    I agree with everything you say here about the song's shortcomings and Bono expressing his "America isn't a country, it's an idea" theme countless times before. I also hated Volcano.

    And yet...I love this song. Love the heavy riff, love Edge's "hold on Brother John" part before the second chorus, love the "na na na na" soulful choral arrangement on the bridge (an improvement over the only good part of Volcano), love the "will you be my sanctuary, refu-Jesus" line, love that it will kick ass live and hopefully connect with a more explicit anti-Trump theme this tour now that he somehow actually became president.
  8. So I just brought a few different formats of the album on u2.com and got no link to the track. Also noticed on the u2.com home page it says pre-order today and download up to four songs today?
  9. The premature 'release' of American Soul was an error. Since corrected. Not now available to download. The 4th track they now refer to is the Kygo remix thingy.
  10. The songs grown on me. I like the verses on Volcano better than AS but the chorus is Little More Better than Volcano's. Wish they haven't recycled but it's not a issue to me. Still enjoy the song.
  11. After listening to the song several times, I have a problem with it, it is too familiar, it has been done before, Volcano meet Get On Your Boots. This band must be more original damn.
  12. Man, this song had such potential. Starts with a laid back Chris Cornell-style vocal then slithers into a low key subtle chorus with ‘look around’. Why couldn’t THAT arrangement have been the song? Would have been an instant U2 classic. The big ‘you are’ chorus killed it. Seriously, who advises these guys? This was a huge and unfortunate miss.
