There goes my hype

Contrary opinion: American Soul is their worst song since Boots, and that's maybe their worst song of all time.

They're still a great band, Bono's melodic skills are intact and they're of course able to put out a set of great songs (and put on a great show, that's for sure) but I don't think they're going to discover any unknown place lately. Last time I had that feeling was when I pressed "play" on The Crystal Ballroom. Before that, I hadn't felt that since I pressed "play" on Cedars Of Lebanon. (And I love many of the songs in between). But back in the day I got that feeling all the time with different albums and eras - even with albums I ended up disliking as a whole. They just don't have that spark anymore as of now (they can get it back of course).
That being said, once SOE is out I'll probably love and adore most of it, just as I've always done. They're the band of my life and I won't ever be able to "call it a day" or "quitting them" as some say. It's just that despite them being the band of my life, I am able to discern when something is good, mediocre, creative, boring, rocking or dull. And YET I'm able to like it all the same, or even like the uncreative over the groundbreaking (I love Get Out Of Your Own Way although it's continuist and bland; I don't love The Blackout even if it's rocking and a departure from what they've done lately).
Does that make me a negative, grumpy complainer? Maybe to some eyes, yes. In my opinion that just makes me a fan with ears and sanity
