I'm sorry to hear that. You're definitely more than welcome to share your opinion, I wasn't trying to stifle it, just to respond to the second part of your post.

But I don't imagine everyone here will love it as much as others, yours is not the first post I've seen from a detractor!

I felt very much the same.

I don't know if I'm disappointed, but I agree with you that it's more of a companion than an album that can stand on its own.

Much like Zooropa to Achtung. Feels like it's not quite fully realized. Some good ideas thrown together.

Would have been better as a 10 song effort. Cut out GOOYOW, American Soul and The Showman. Put those as B-Sides.

I know this won't be well received as this is a fan(atics) site, but that's how I see it at this point.

As always with new U2 albums, my perceptions of new material is fluid for a bit.
  5. Meaning... I reserve the right to change my mind.
  6. Maybe SOE is like another pop but not how Pop was initially received rather how it is received today. I think a lot of u2 fans have now warmed to pop but some really don’t get it . I’m not saying this album sounds like pop or anything just talking about how it is now viewed.
  7. Wow, I am amazed how opinions can vary! It's my honeymoon with SOE, so I might also change my mind. But, for the time being, I am really loving it. There's no Bad, TUF, Pride, Real Thing, WOWY, Streets, One, or even BD or Vertigo. So I'm not sure it will be a commercial success. But it really works for me as a whole, and the songs keep growing on me.

Because these days is almost impossible to have commercial success with quality music...

I am most disappointed with American Soul. That at least had the potential to be a classic deep cut, had they completely left off the (recycled) chorus. It just doesn’t need one.
  10. It’s U2 in its strongest form this century, it dicks all over SOI, NLOTH, HTDAAB and ATYCLB easily.

Any other band would kill to write these songs, not bad at all for a bunch of guys with a combined age of over 220.

I think it’s a phenomenal achievement to write music like this that can compete with their best work.
  11. Indeed . I'd rather keep the quality - Neil McCormick's point (and suggestion to his friend Bono) in his review, too.

I agree. I probably wouldn't say that it dicks all over those other albums (they're mostly really great albums). But I feel SOE stands right up with TUF, JT, and AB/Z. I am also listening to SOI again; I find that these two records complement each other - together, they are quite an impressive achievement for a bunch of musicians well in their 50's.
