  1. I cannot properly judge or review this album because I’m not a fan of this type of music. Just like I wouldn’t be able to give a proper opinion on country or edm music because I don’t like it. I am a rock n roll fan and this album isn’t that. I’m not knocking it but it’s blatantly obvious u2 are trying to fit in. U2 used to go against the grain but now it seems like there’s too many cooks in the kitchen and too much of a need to sound relevant. I do not like pop or what modern top 10 sounds like so I do not like this album. I respect that they are still recording music and I’ll still be seeing them 4 times next year but I really wish they would strip back the production (auto-tune??!). There are good songs somewhere in this album but they are presented in such a glossy way that I can’t get into it. Again, I’m not knocking them it’s just I can’t be a fan of an album that’s in a genre I don’t like. I’m happy that most here love it. To me SOI is miles better and I still prefer the stripped back “dad-rock” sound of ATYCLB.

    That's understandable. Of all the people that didn't like it, most would fit in this category I think. They miss Edge, the guitar solos, the more heavier stuff.

    Finally, your opinion!

    I kind of agree, being a rock fan makes it harder to appreciate a straightforwardly-poppy album like this one... But having ears open helps a lot. I don't consider most of Passengers, The Unforgettable Fire or Rattle And Hum to be "rock" but I like them anyway because they have the U2 seal and the U2 scent - even if they're playing a different game to what I'm used to love them for.

    I'm pretty confident this new songs will improve when they play them live. At the end of the day they're a rock band, and no matter how overcooked and cheesy are the songs in their studio form, they can make them rock live.

    Just out of curiosity, which are these "good songs somewhere" for you?

    What’s confusing? I’m a rock n roll fan and dislike Coldplay and modern pop which is the overall sound and direction of this album. No big deal just sharing my thoughts.

    I’m just happy they are still an active band who Record new music and tour. Maybe in 2 weeks I’ll love it. Who knows.

    Really though, what do you consider “rock n roll”? Cause Achtung Baby isn’t “rock n roll” to me. If anything it would have been “alternative”. But not it is classic rock.

    This album sounds modern but it doesn’t sound like what is at the top of the charts now. That is ridiculous to say. It doesn’t sound like rap, it isn’t EDM
  8. Just discovered that the tracks I liked the most were produced by Ryan Tedder.
    Anyway, a little more better than SOI. I didn't expect a masterpiece, but it will surely be an album I'll listen 'til the end.
    I'd give it 3,5/5.

    I think it is the concept of what constitutes a genre that was confusing me. I associate Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis' Jailhouse Rock, etc with rock n roll. The fact that your profile pic is Zooropa, like mine, added to the confusion...I've never considered Zooropa to be rock n roll, or even AB, JT, etc. The early U2 is more punk. Additionally ATYCLB is as far as SoE is from r n r.

    But it's all subjective.

    Agreed. As much as Bono likes to tout it, U2 were never really a rock and roll band until Vertigo, and even that’s not what I would call rock at its best. Streets, Still Haven’t Found, Bad, One, none of these are rock tunes either.

    I’ll never prefer the stripped back sound U2 had in the early 2000s to them exploring sounds with producers, even and especially if it means picking up current trends and using them on their own music. U2 going against the grain is certainly not their early 2000s period, nor would it he U2 making “rock” like SoI. That’s been done, to death.

    I understand what MoFoNYR15 trying to get at.
    There are parts about the production that some might feel need to be stripped back to a more "Dad rock type of level, less auto tune although there's only a few snippets of it. There's a lot of "old skool" fans that hate this record and there's some that have adapted to enjoy "modern" U2. U2 are like any band...trying if you will to re invent themselves...Listen to old Coldplay music then listen to their sound only 17 years later..more Pop...autotune..silly colabs.. They have had to adapt to the music trends A LOT faster than U2 have in the 40 years they have been doing their own thing... . I mean did you really think this late in their career the would have another "hit" song...well they kinda did it i think with YTBTAM..it deserve's more views on youtube..

    this album has great songs and they are some of my favorite ever, so early but true.
    but where has edge gone since lets say......HTDAAB. Summer Of Love has neat catchy guitar chords. And needs no extra from edge here i think. If you haven't already check out LikeAsong's cover on Youtube of SOL its top stuff
    Lights Of Home needed a longer solo.
    Book Of Your Heart, for me was like Coldplay Guitar,Amazing wanted more of it.

    The Blackout, A tricky one...its kinda heavy but to overproduced so its sounds not as heavy..if that makes sense. It should sound more like a Out Of Control, Electric Co. type of sound but it fails in my view.
    I was listening to Boy the other day before release then i listened to the new album..and i thought WOW so good, but...wheres Edge when you need him..Boy had 30/40/50 second guitar bits all the way through. sorry for the ramble but as good as the album is, i do miss RAW sounding stuff from the guys...

    Good opinion. I do like SOE, but misses a bit The Edge. For me SOI is better, but would not say miles better.

    In general I am happy that U2 still making albums and not sounds like they did 30 years ago.
