I've been playing SOE like crazy in the house these days (minus the happy meal trio) and she loves it. She loves Summer of Love, Landlady, Little Things, you name it. Every different day she has another SOE song stuck in her head.
So I think this album can really appeal to casual fans if the marketing is right (no iTunes shenanigans, etc.)

It’s going to take me time to digest this album – it sounds so different to anything I’ve heard before from U2. This reminds me very much of how I felt after listening to Achtung for the first time (potentially a good sign)
It’s full of successful contradictions. The songs sound light and fresh but these are not throwaway pop songs. There is real depth under the surface. They have somehow managed to make a cohesive sounding album, despite using so many producers which is a feat.

Love Is All We Have Left - Interesting
Best Thing and Showman - Like it.
Lights of Home - good, nice outro very catchy
Little Things - Very good
The rest is... I don't know. It's okay I guess.

Really? I have listened to it a couple of times now. It’s a good album. But nothing surprising. It sounds the same as the albume since ATYCLB.
Achtung Baby had a significant differtent feel and sound, if you ask me...

What I mean to say is not that it sounds like Achtung but that my reaction to SOE is similar to when I heard AB for the first time, i.e. I was surprised and heard some things I haven't before.
To my ear, it does sound different to ATYCLB, HTDAAB, NLOTH and SOI. Bono's voice is higher in the mix, as are the bass and drums and Edge seems to be taking more of a back seat.
Everyone hears different things from a new album I guess. It's still very early days for me but at the moment, I'm really enjoying the new sounds

I understand what you mean. But overall sound of the album is not that different from ATYCLB.
The only album which surprised me was NLOTH.
That had some really great (classic sounding) songs. Still one of my favourite albums to play.

I agree with that.
The sound is nothing to do with AB (maybe the Barlow tracks), but it was an "unexpected" sound to me as well.
This time "indie" instead of "alternative"...

I agree that No Line is the most different of the previous four. IMO the quality is not as consistently good as SOE though. I can't wait to hear these new songs live.
