1. fecking DVD I burned the show to doesn't work on my DVD player. I shall convert it to iPod format though and watch it on there
  2. 1983-08-20 - St. Goarshausen, Germany - Loreley Amphitheater (Audio)

    Sound:

Great boot especially from 83. Good mix overall, some parts are muffled and the vocals are great. Love Adam's bass. You can actually make out the tones instead of just notes. There are some rough spots but this is a solid sounding boot.

    Performance:

The band was sounding great. Great performances of all the songs. Very energetic

    Highlights:

Twilight - Really enjoyed this one, especially while listening through ear phones
    An Cat Dubh
    Into The Heart
    Surrender
    Seconds
    Gloria - Usually always great

    Overall:

If you like the War era, you need to get this boot! Hell, get this boot anyway, its a great addition to the collection. I would rate this one of the best War shows I've heard. It's a keeper.

    Rating: 9 out of 10

    Sound

Not one of my favourites. I appreciate we're dealing with a 25 year old show here, but I found it a bit muffled. Edge was impossible to pick out at times, especially Electric Co.
Not unlistenable by any means though

    Video - 4 stars
    Audio - 3 stars

    Performance

Very good War show. Not my favourite era, but they gave a good concert here, especially considering it's not a dedicated U2 crowd (which might explain why they're a bit on the quiet side....).
No bad songs, all very solid, but no particular standout. SBS I guess, if I had to pick one.
Was hoping for "and maybe the time is right" on NYD but didn't get it. Shame.

    Overall

One of the best War boots. Audio is worth having in your collection for occasional listening. The video is a must have; easily the best of the tour (until UABRS is available on DVD!).

One question (for Gerard possibly):- I thought Bono didn't associate with the Irish flag at that time? But he wore it during Electric Co? Any light to shed?

Audio - 8/10, have it in your iTunes etc
Video 9.5/10, have it on your iPod / video player.

Over to you Ali for next week; please post your choice tomorrow
  4. I know I haven't posted yet (watching show now but I feel that I have something to add). A lot of you guys are picking SBS out as a standout just because of a lack of anything else. I'm surprised at this because SBS from this show is the exact performance found on Under A Blood Red Sky.

to remove the German and add from another show I guess?!

Is this common knowledge; was I just being ignorant?!

that tracks from this show were on Blood Red Sky? More common knowledge i'd say. SBS, I Will Follow, New Year's Day, The Electric Co. and '40' from this show all made it on to Under A Blood Red Sky. This gig IIS Under A Blood Red Sky

Hahaha, I kinda knew Electric Co. sounded familiar somehow!

    Sound and Image

Not as good as I first remember. Edge is nowhere at times (Out of Control most notably). On the plus side though Adam's bass is quite prominent and Bono's vocals filter through very nicely. The video is excellent, consider the age and it's astounding. Nice colors, only minor pixlelation during crowd shots. The only fault I could see was the spotlight trails during moving shots but I think these kinda looked cool.

    Audio - 7.5
    Video - 9

    Performance

I have read that this was U2's first live televised performance but I think they battle any nerves quite well. Bono does look a little uncomfortable at times but I put it down to the crowd (quite cold and scary looking. I assumed that they were waiting for some heavy metal bands). The overall performance is hard to knock considering the fact that 80% of the material on Under A Blood Red Sky came from this gig. I didn;t like that it took the band quote a few songs before we actually heard anything from War but when we did it was a breath of fresh air. Kudos to Bono for trying to get the crowd involved (jumping into them, throwing himself about, dancing with girls, going walkies etc) thou he does look like a tit away in the distance during The Electric Co. with the crowd barely noticing him. He did most of this with little return from the audience but fair play.

    8/10

    Overall

Get the audio, get the video. Hard to fault really considering it's UABRS status. It was interesting to note other peoples reviews and lack of standout moments. If you heard SBS from UABRS you would say it was awesome but when listening hear it sounds little above average for that era. Funny how views can change on a performance when heard in much better quality with a few minor edits. Overall though it's a pretty great show and video and a nice memento of the tour

    8/10 overall.

PS : What a cool venue that was. Very scenic.
  11. I actually got more into songs like Twilight and Surrender with this boot, than songs such as SBS and I Will Follow. These songs have sparked more interest here than the slightly more popular.

the War songs did give this song more life. Surrender was my top pick from the gig
