I always felt that War was also pretty strong as an album in terms of thematic unity...actually.

I agree that Red Light has never been my favorite, but next to SBS, NYD, 40 & Drowning Man, I am still very fond of Seconds, Surrender and Two Hearts Beat As One (although Surrender mostly because of it's live renditions).

However, I am willing to face the possibility that, just like The Unforgettable Fire, I overrate this album* simply because I got to know it in my teenage years when the young brain is most sensitive to musical impressions. (So the fact that I enjoy SOE so much at this...ahum...older age could be a sign of its brilliance ).

    * although I never rated War as "best" album. Somewhere between 5th and 8th best album I believe (and, after listening to it again, that ain't never gonna change...I still love it...ah! )

same case in here. War was my first U2 album (it was a cassette), so I played it over and over for years.
I totally loved side A, while side B was "meh" for me except for Forty.
Once I discovered this site, I've come to learn how to love Two Hearts and Surrender, they're both amazing live.

But also, I don't think I've rated it in my top 3 (or top 5) since a couple of decades, and I don't think I've seen people rating it in their top 5 ever, so I can't see why could it be considered overrated.
(Unless we're considering the band... the band indeed overplays SBS, maybe NYD a bit, but those are as important as Streets for most casual fans, so I get it... but other than that they ignore the album, so I still can't see how it'd be overrated)

In terms of consistency, I'd put Boy ahead of War. However, I prefer SBS to IWF and NYD to OOC so I tend to rate War (#4) higher than Boy (#5).
  4. ...and for sure, War was a big "teenage years" album for me, too (although I didn't really get into it until 1988 or so).

For similar reasons, any post 1990s albums (after graduation from university) never impacted me the same as the first nine. It's not the band's fault. I just changed. (Still love the Elevation and 360 tours, however).

  5. Well, there you go...

(In order to disagree... I think An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart, or Twilight are better than anything else in War... I'd even say The Ocean and A Day Without Me... I really prefer Boy over War...)

I'm continuing to enjoy SOE, too, but it's definitely not a top 5 album for me. Maybe somewhere in the 6-8 range? SOI I never got into quite as much - that one is closer to the bottom in my own ranking. But I still enjoy both and am glad to see the band continuing to make (and tour behind) new music. So it's all good.
  7. Overrated IMO is ATYCLB and HTDAAB. I'd say underrated is Zooropa and NLOTH.
  8. I agree with you
All that you can't AND How to dismantle are very overrated
Zooropa and No line ( the most experimental U2 albums) are underrated
They're Miles ahead any other " rock" album
