It would probably seem early, which in all honesty a good thing. If they retire and too many people are saying "yeah, about time" it won't mean as much.

Barring some sort of health or internal band problem that would force an immediate break-up, they will announce it along with a world tour with multiple legs.
Not saying this as a judgement against them...but honestly, these guys are capitalists to the absolute core. They will absolutely let you know when they are having a final tour, and when you can buy $750 tickets to see it at a venue near you- no doubt in my mind.

I think they'll just continue to treat every album or tour they make as if it were their last, like they did with Experience:
They're still thinking about future albums and future tours, but understand that maybe that won't be possible.
Also, more as something I wish, than something I think, they could have a "hidden" farewell album, those songs like Mercy, All My Life or Northstar, in a vault or something, ready to be released once they definitely won't be able to release anything more (a.k.a. when one of them is missing).
This would allow them to continue working on new material (which clearly is what drives them in their career and in their lives, that's why I don't think they're planning on retire officially), while at the same time would let them have the last word the way they want to.
---
About the excessive work and touring these last few years, maybe it has caused the opposite effect. Instead of being tired of it, maybe they're ready for more.
Also, their kids are not really kids anymore. Now they're not as homebound as they were in the last decade.
