Willie and Gavin will think of something!

It would probably seem early, which in all honesty a good thing. If they retire and too many people are saying "yeah, about time" it won't mean as much.
    Agreed.

And as far as farewell tour and what that could and should look like, I've no idea. I think I'd want it to be extremely basic, as you said. Simple stage, maybe one simple little gimmick, but nothing like they're pushing some brand new extreme idea. I'd just want it to be "an intimate night with U2, one last time", and that's it.

I think the only reason I'd want them to do another tour at least is because the Experience show wasn't that satisfying. While the album is a perfect bookend and I'd be very happy with it being their last, this "half" of the tour wasn't, IMO. There was no moment of really thinking "this is it, this is goodbye", you know? I didn't leave with that satisfaction - especially considering the cartoon said "to be continued" as if they know there's unfinished business. Fuck, I saw the Joshua Tree Tour last year and it was amazing, but to have my last show be the one the other night and NOT hear Streets? Not having it.

But I think ultimately I'd like something like an arena tour, Elevation style. No massive screen, just the whole arena focused on the boys, and no gimmicks, just them up there doing their thing. I'd be happy to hear them not even use backing tracks etc. - just the four guys. As much as I know the band hate being nostalgic, this tour had some of it, and I'd love even more of it. I'd love for them to start a show with Out of Control "we're called U2, this is our first single" and end with 40, end with Larry leaving the stage. I'd love moments like the Streets/ZooTV moment when Bono waves to his younger self. That sort of stuff.

Shoot, double-posted in the edit sorry
  3. I think it will be very difficult for the band to release an album after SOE and brand it as a farewell album, surely if they're going to do that, it would be SOE. And to some extent, I think they kind of have branded it as a farewell without being too obvious.

Songs of Innocence - Band growing up

Songs of Experience - Looking back at life and thinking of death

In their last two albums they've covered the beginning and End. It would be weird if maybe in 3/4 years they release another album like "NLOTH" or "HTDAAB" and use that as their farewell album.

I don't want U2 to end, and it does seem like they have enough content for a few more albums, but I think leaving it here would be the best place in their career to "narratively" wrap things up.

However I think they have one more tour in them. Leave it 5 years (health permitting) and do a MASSIVE stadium tour for 2/3 years like 360 (is the demand still there?) touring the new album, but mainly performing the songs we all love and know.

EDIT: For this tour I actually bought tickets for 5 shows. I became a fan in 2015, so still relatively new, and saw them once in 2015 and once in 2017. I went for 5 shows this time around because I always wanted to do multiple shows, actually like the new album (one of my faves) and honestly don't know how much U2 have left in them, so see them whilst I can!
  4. For me personally i think they won't retire in a couple of years.i give them still 10 years.but with just two albums.
  5. I think they won't have an "official" last album or "official" farewell tour.
I think they'll just continue to treat every album or tour they make as if it were their last, like they did with Experience:
They're still thinking about future albums and future tours, but understand that maybe that won't be possible.

Also, more as something I wish, than something I think, they could have a "hidden" farewell album, those songs like Mercy, All My Life or Northstar, in a vault or something, ready to be released once they definitely won't be able to release anything more (a.k.a. when one of them is missing).
This would allow them to continue working on new material (which clearly is what drives them in their career and in their lives, that's why I don't think they're planning on retire officially), while at the same time would let them have the last word the way they want to.

    ---

About the excessive work and touring these last few years, maybe it has caused the opposite effect. Instead of being tired of it, maybe they're ready for more.

Also, their kids are not really kids anymore. Now they're not as homebound as they were in the last decade.
  6. I think they will make a concert that began with The Ocean (like the first tour that is Boy Tour) and perform their best songs
  7. These guys are WAAAAAY too business savvy not to publicly announce a final tour and milk it for all it's worth. Barring some sort of health or internal band problem that would force an immediate break-up, they will announce it along with a world tour with multiple legs.

Not saying this as a judgement against them...but honestly, these guys are capitalists to the absolute core. They will absolutely let you know when they are having a final tour, and when you can buy $750 tickets to see it at a venue near you- no doubt in my mind.

I have nothing at all against a tour being advertised as a farewell tour. When I have a problem is when a tour gets dubbed the "farewell, farewell" tour or the subsequent "farewell 3" tour... and then the "we really mean it this time" tour...

This is something I hadn't really considered...really good point.
  10. I really can’t see SOE being the last album or E&I being the last tour. I would know when I had that feeling I was kidding myself on or having to convince myself but I’m in absolutely no doubt there will be more to come from them. I think we could have a quiet couple of years though when E&I is over.

Except for Adam. He's a new father... who started a family much later than the rest of the guys.
