  1. 12th here also, I remember 82 fondly, and everyone wanting to be Zico or Rummenigge at school when playing. Personal favourites for me have to be 86/90 - good tournaments for England I guess - though bittersweet - and ultimately bitter, but they're obviously more enjoyable when your team goes deep in. I think even had England not qualified this time I'd be enjoying it though, there has been some first class matches. Some needless theatrics and silliness that still seems to plague some teams, but overall really enjoyable.

  3. WC 1978. 7,5 years old. I remember lying in bed listening to the final "Holland vs Argentina" on the radio. It's 1-1 and in the 90th minute Rensenbrink shoots to the pole ...

    Now, after 3 times loosing the final, I'm sort of OK with us not being there. It's better for the heart

The first games I can actually remember watching are the 1972 and 1973 fa cup finals, England beating austria 7-0 in 1973 and the disaster against Poland the same year but i can remember the 1974 world cup like it was yesterday and 1982 could have been an hour ago. I doubt most people who saw the dutch in 1974 could forget them in a hurry and Brazil and Italy from 1982 will be the best game I've ever seen until the day comes when England actually win it again. What you also have to remember is the period from say 1972 onwards is where television coverage becomes more widespread plus it goes from shades of grey to technicolor.

    Thank god we didn't get an extra half hour of that game. I had amnesty internationals phone number ready.
