    Lovetown Tour 2nd leg: Europe
New Year's Day is in the original setlist before Pride but is not played
4-star audience recording here at the moment
Last ever performance of The Unforgettable Fire.
    [..]

    Sound

One of the very best audience recordings available on this site. More than worthy of it's 4-stars and maybe more.
A little murky in places, but does not detract from the overall listening enjoyment.

Special mention was made by nearly all reviewers of the crowd. They elevate this recording to a higher level. Bono questions at one point whether they will lift the roof off, and is right to do so. Superb audience

    Performance

Popular with all reviewers bar one (more later). Some excellent reviews were submitted and are worthy of reading in their own right - starting HERE.

Lovetown is a popular tour with all the BRT members and this was evident in the number of reviews.
It is questioned whether the other shows in Rotterdam are of even higher quality than this one. Gerard certainly felt that the show lacked 'something' compared to the other nights (particularly the 9th and 10th). Sergio agreed that this was his feeling too.

Standout track - Running to Stand Still. Excellent unknown snippet at the end and audience participation.
Also worthy mentions - ISHFWILF, MLK and The Unforgettable Fire on its last ever live outing (so far? )
All other tracks are at least good.
The BB KIng section did not find as much favour with reviewers as the preceding tracks (it was the largest contributing reason for Gerard's dissatisfaction with the show), so you may feel the show tails off a little.

    Overall
Very strong band (and even stronger audience, to be fair) performance and good sound make this an essential listen for anyone with even a passing interest in Lovetown Tour bootlegs (which, really, should be all of you).
The nostalgia for The Unforgettable Fire and possibly the strongest pre-Zoo RTSS make it essential listening.

Not the best Lovetown, but very much one you should download and listen to.

    Try these too:-

Edited to include info on Gerard's upgrade
  6. Uh oh! I didn't want to be first cab off the rank, being a BRT virgin and all, but I'm going away in a couple of days so here goes...

    aussiemofo review for:

    2005-12-05 - Boston, Massachusetts - Fleet Centre

    Sound

Despite a few crackles and the occasional elevated crowd noise, I found this audience recording very good (in my novice opinion...). The band certainly came through very audible on my iPod and I even found myself double-checking that this was in fact a three star recording. I found it very comparable to a few four stars that I have.

    Performance

As soon as I saw this show chosen I couldn't wait to have a listen and it didn't disappoint. It was an irresistably unique Vertigo setlist with a handful of infrequently played tracks which promised a memorable performance and delivered in spades. This was the last of seven Boston Vertigo shows over three stints during 2005 and you could tell the boys wanted to finish it off with a bang. Bono was in a particularly celebratory mood and I enjoyed him taking the piss out of Edge before ISHFWILF.

The opening set was delivered in the usual impressive fasion but the jewel in the crown for me was Gloria. It was the first time I'd heard it played on Vertigo and what a rendtion! Occassionally plucking a song out of the vault (I believe Gloria was only played around 20 times on tour) adds so much to the performance. It's played better, it doesn't sound tired, Bono gets into it more and it's an unexpected treat for the crowd. U2 should do this more often.

Other standouts in the top half were Beautiful Day (excellent snippet here) and Original of the Species (again a breath of fresh air) before Sometimes provided a lull as it regularly does for me.

The War set was perhaps the highlight sequence of the show. All of them were played exceptionally well, particularly Love and Peace and Sunday Blood Sunday (I love Rock the Casbah snippet), and this continued into Streets (perhaps with the exception of Pride). Was it just me or did Bono sound different during the ending of Streets? His vocals were a little exaggerated and I felt this improved what had become a tired old Vertigo rendition.

I loved Instant Karma! Again I'd never heard it on Vertigo and it only added to the farewell party atmosphere (they don't always have to play Party Girl for special occasions!) and the diversity of the set as did Crumbs from Your Table (only on the last point though).

All other songs were good except....

    Negative points:

Without or Without You. Seriously does Bono hate this song now? Never had I heard him sound like a dying mule more than during WOWY. He sounded like he was in pain. This song should be banished until Bono feels like singing it again.

The Zoo encore selection was a little disappointing. UTEOTW felt out of place as an opener (but it sounded ok). I would have much preferred Zoo Station or The Fly and Mysterious Ways sounded tired like it had for much of the tour.

Also was it just me or did Bono talk a lot during the show? Seriously it felt like there was a speech every second or third song.

    Overall

I found this to be a very strong band performance and a fine Vertigo show. I'll play this several times again due to some excellent versions of both classics and Vertigo numbers and the amazing diversity of the setlist. I would loved to have been at a Boston show having just listened to one of them. Rating 7 1/2 /10

P.S. Thanks to Ali709 for picking the show. It's a keeper!
  7. Excellent review mofo! Top drawer.

I agree about Bono's talking but didn't you find it nice that it wasn't all the same speeches as evry other night. Nice bit of variety.

WOWY - there has to be a reason that Bono now uses a teleprompt for this song shame really....
  8. Ok, here goes for my debut review!

    2005-12-05 - Boston, Massachusetts - Fleet Centre

    Sound -

I was at first originally apprehensive because of the 3-star rating, but in hindsight I think this is more than a bit unfair - this sounded at least 3.5, perhaps even a 4 star for me. Ok, there is a certain element of crowd hum in the background, with some fairly distinct clapping and the occasional period of murmuring, but overall the key things (i.e. Bono's vocals & Edge's guitar to take the lead, and Larry and Adam's rhythm driving the show forward) were loud and clear.

    Performance -

Firstly, I think Ali deserves a pat on the back for choosing a show with such a great setlist to get stuck into, and for me the positives FAR outweighted the negatives and with that in mind, thankyou Ali!

Now, bearing that in mind, you won't be surprised to discover that I really enjoyed reviewing this show! An overall great performance from the guys, if not flawless, but then again it's important to remember they are human! ("How dare you!" I hear the masses cry...). What I really enjoyed about this was a) the great interaction between a good crowd and Bono, b) the inclusion of new songs which I'd either not come across on any previous Vertigo setlists or quite simply never before and c) the alternative encore set. Judging by the recording, everyone was in infectious high spirits and the crowd fed off it, which just added to a great overall feel. The audience responded to the big crowd-pleasers like Vertigo, Elevation, Beautiful Day etc. and embraced those songs that the band play with more economy these days. After making notes on each song in turn, I drew up a list of highlights that really struck home for me -

    - City of Blinding Lights: again, if not my favourite opener of all time, it's certainly up there when the band get it spot on, and this time round they certainly did. Edge's guitar had power, Adam and Larry drove the song along well, the crowd (as I said above) really got into it and when Bono sang "Time won't leave me as I am", the hairs on my neck stood up - it's moments like these that remind me why I love U2 and their music.
    - Vertigo: so simple, so effective - Edge rips out the riff with gusto, Bono takes the stage and the crowd love it. Easy equation, great result. Loved the Dirty Water snippet - I won't pretend to know whether there's any significance behind it but it fitted in with the song, unlike a couple that I've heard before...
-Gloria: came very early on in the set, but enjoyed every minute and stole the show for me. This is one of the aforementioned songs that I've not heard before on a Vertigo setlist, and with that in mind I relished it. For me, this was as close to a flawless performance as I've come across. Fantastic (I also really liked Adam's alternative bass solo as opposed to the slap bass of previous tours - and indeed the original song - which never worked for me in the general feel of the song)
-Love And Peace Or Else: again, a song that justified its inclusion with a really thumping performance and, again, Edge's solo - how does he make something so simple sound so good? Sheer brilliance.
-Where The Streets Have No Name: I was reciting Bono's speech until he caught me out with mention of Jubilee 2000! Joking aside, this performance once again demonstrated why 'Streets' is U2's wildcard for live shows - the very SECOND Edge kicks in with the iconic riff, the place goes wild and doesn't stop, which gave the show the kick in the rear that was necessary (see below) - the only downer for me was Bono not singing the 3rd verse with the same conviction of yesteryear but y'know what? It's still a great song.
-One: I know this song gets it in the neck from many quarters, but for me, it's performances like this justify that its inclusion. Edge's guitar work always brings out the best in this song, and unlike the Chicago DVD, Bono's guitar didn't make me cringe due to excessive distortion/gain, but complemented as I think it should.
-Until The End Of The World: nice change to the encore setlist for me, whilst still retaining the Achtung Baby theme - great performance for me (although that said, it took some adjusting to for me without the brutal distorted mayhem of Zoo Station or the wild rock'n'roll of The Fly). The only thing I wish they'd do about this song is bring back some kick to Edge's guitar - delay is all well and good BUT sometimes a bit of gain doesn't do any harm!
-Instant Karma: I don't know the John Lennon original and thus don't know how this compares but either way, I loved it. The jaunty, playful feel of the song seemed to really feed into the band and it showed - it really felt like they were playing with a smile on their face and it was all the better for it. Simply brilliant.
-Other positives: Bono seemed to have his "quote cap" on for this show, some of the stuff he came out with really brought a smile to my face, especially the lighthearted abuse he gave Edge! e.g."I just discovered that Edge can't talk and play! He is human after all..." and "Edge to get a new little trainset". The variation he gave his speeches was also refreshing, although I wish he'd find a way to cut them down just that bit more! I really associate with the Coexist stuff BUT bugger me it seemed to take half the show!

With that out of the way, there was one main negative for me -

-The show's momentum: an inherent problem for me with regard to many Vertigo shows was the lack of pace that seemed to creep in at times, and this time round it seemed to come in c. Original Of The Species. In itself, it was a fine performance (as were other slower songs like Miss Sarajevo, although Sometimes You Can't Make On Your Own never got going for me as a live entity - it just doesn't come alive, and Edge's guitar sounds more like a sitar to me than the anthemic feel he created on the album version), for sure, but seemed to be lend itself to the loss of oomph in the show and, despite the best efforts of Love And Peace Or Else, the segue of Sunday Bloody Sunday >>> Bullet The Blue Sky lacked intensity and the show suffered a bit for it. For songs that, to me, encapsulate hatred towards conflict and violence by almost shouting them down (well, not shouting but I hope you catch my drift), they were too slow and lacked venom. However, this is not really a criticism of this one particular show, but more something that I felt was endemic throughout the Vertigo Tour (that said, I still loved it!)

    Overall -

This show is definitely worth downloading. Simple as!

Well, on a more constructive level, this was a great performance where everyone seemed to really enjoyed the occasion, and if you're looking for something a bit different to most Vertigo shows, this is definitely worth the consideration. A great setlist, and a performance that did it justice.

A real gem - again, credit to Ali for picking it to be reviewed!

(PS - I may need to start cutting down on how much I write for future reviews lol...)

  9. Another top-notch review from a debutant

(I don't agree with half what you've said, lol, but excellent none-the-less)

Us oldies are going to have to up our games...
  10. Right, here's the deal. I have the bootleg, downloaded it a couple of days ago. Listened to some songs briefly, liking what I hear so far. So, I'm going to write a summary over the course of this week, basically whenever I get time, in notepad, then when I've done the report, i'll post it here. however, i may not get round to it at all, so don't expect a summary, but at the same time, look out for one.

i'll try my best to get back on the roundtable.
