(And yes you can! But a proper microphone helps)

And use a proper recording app when recording with an iPhone, for instance: Voice Record Pro 3.3.6 - or at least an app that doesn't compress the recorded audio - or as little as possible. External microphones are indeed recommended (see tapers guide).
