They replaced the chapter of the story which tells about their younger years with the chapter that tells about a defining point in their career. They almost split up and yet they came back together again. This is what these Achtung Baby/Zooropa songs tell.
I even believe that it's part of the narrative that Bono goes alone to the screen during Zoo Station and at the intro of Stay, to show that he was indeed all alone. The band were miles apart. Then, Adam, Larry and Edge join one by one to illustrate them getting back together. The chapter ends with the four of them being as close as possible to each other performing at the top of their game, while the screen closes. A story with a good ending!
