I think they've gone out there since the SOE promo tour knowing that this is either their last time out there... or potentially their last time out there.
Paying close attention going back a year, I've sensed a different vibe and atmosphere amongst the band - I detect a minor hint of sombreness and sadness in their shows this year, a sense of finality and a sense of things being wrapped up... but at the same time, a sense of the band enjoying themselves like its their last go-round. I also detected the same thing on last years TJT30 tour with those songs, perhaps like they've already made their decision for the years ahead.
That supposed renewed Livenation deal was never confirmed, though the info reportedly came from a good source. It might well be true. But I don't think it's ever been confirmed, nor has it found its way into the music press at large who are usually all over this sort of news (as previously renewed contracts have demonstrated). Maybe the deal was prepared and the band are still chewing it over to see how they feel after the dust has settled on this tour. Who knows?
But let's see... TJT laid to rest 30 years on - their absolute timeless classic adored by the masses that catapulted them into a whole different level of success, those songs may have been played for the last time already last year. The band have given many of the diehard fans what they've being crying out for years with 'Acrobat'. Paying tribute to their fathers with 'Dirty Day' which they've deliberately left until Dublin it seems, and a one-time only live performance of 'Landlady' for Ali at home, both these latter two songs being something they are doing for themselves and their loved ones first and foremost as opposed for the fans. Loose ends are being tied up.
SOI and SOE themselves and their corresponding tours complete the circle that has been the bands 'musical journey'. There might be more to come in the future, who knows, and I'm sure they are leaving the door wide open to reconvene at some point in the future if they're feeling it - one reason why I don't think they'll ever say goodbye and do a farewell tour or anything of that nature. But let's face it, none of them are getting any younger, Larry definitely wants to do some acting, and I'd imagine Adam wants to spend time being a Dad.
Realistically, as much as I love this band, how much gas is left in the tank? There can't be that much more for them to say without treading old ground again, and I don't think they'd want to do that artistically speaking. And we know from how long it took to get SOE together, they've really struggled.
'What are we gonna do when it's all been said..." and maybe it all has been. I hope not, and I hope they will prove otherwise in the years ahead. Maybe they can dream it all up again. We can only hope.
