The scary thing here is that, in a way, I understand @Remy's rating: the Empress Valley bootleg has Bono louder in the mix that @hoserama's latest

In general when it comes to U2 I personally prefer a 4-star audience recording over a 4,5 star iem-matrix. Mainly because the U2 iem's have a lot of extra sounds like metronome ("shakers"!) and/or count-in's. So when it comes to rating iem's and iem-aud matrices, I usually look at it from a more technical point of view.

But the very idea of an audience-iem matrix is that both sources run at the same time. From that perspective I hear that the Empress Valley matrix is a bit loose on the time alignment. Which means, in short, that the audience source isn't matched exactly to the iem source. While Hoserama's matrix, in contrast, is matched perfectly.
0-1 for @hoserama (yes, you'll be the visiting team today )

When it comes to distracting noises, the Empress Valley does little (if at all) to hide the metronome shaker and the count-in's (compare ASOH). But while the @hoserama matrix is virtually void of count-in's (0-2!), removing the shaker came with a price, most notably in the 12-14kHz range. And, honestly, I think in this particular case I would prefer the EV shaker to the resudial noise of hoserama's mix (1-2...). But this may be down to personal preference (and some of you might not even hear that resudial noise...)

What I think is down to personal preference is the mix itself. Like I said, the Empress Valley has Bono much louder than @hoserama's matrix. Therefore one might preserve the EV has having a more clear sound (2-2). But it is also a somewhat thinner sound. Hoserama's mix has a richer bass (imho) and a more balanced mix of the band. But maybe you need good speakers or a headphone to appreciate that (2-3!).

So I say @hoserama wins on technical points, but still I would rate both mixes as 4-star bootlegs. But knowing how fond most of you are of iem-matrices, I would add a 0.5 bonus point to both... simply for being an iem-aud matrix*

Final @BigGiRL verdict: 4.5 stars for both

...and also because I rate for @u2start and the "star" system is also serving as an "encouragement for listening." Practically this means that iem/iem-aud bootlegs are rated between 3.5 and 5 stars, while audience recordings range 3 to 4.5 stars - only in rare cases 5 stars, or 2.5... It is just the nature of having one grading system for two types of recordings...
  2. Thanks to the ones involved.
Despite your skills to reduce the crew chatter level , I found them quite annoying with headphones : You're "IN" the show and music and suddenly some shout pop up (but as you said it's a matter of taste, don't get me wrong I enjoyed some parts ).

Did you ever try to work back on your old stuff with your "up to date" tools? (to reduce the counts on 2005-04-05 - Los Angeles - Matrix Mix for example ...I love this one man!)
  3. Many thanks hoserama for sharing your mix of Seattle 2017 JT show !! I can’t wait to give it a listen!!!
  4. really no complaints about hoserama. His JT2017 recordings from Pasadena, Detroit and Sao Paulo are really jewels to me. I give it a listen very often. it never gets boring.

A lot of my favorite recordings are IEMs, even a few of the old ALDs as well. I don't mind the clicks, piano bits or counting LOL
  6. Thanks for this great upload! Is there any chance in the nearer future for an IEM/AUD Mix from Croker 2017? That would be a nice one, too ...
  7. The clicks and counting is what a IEM makes interesting to me!
  8. Different IEMs of the various band members have aided me with learning and practicing guitar and bass ?
  9. What are some of those odd noises that frequently occur in Seattle? It's hard to explain but just go to 3:50 mark on "Mothers of the Disappeared" or 0:10 on "The Little Things.."

    "Recording & Mixing Notes:
For the last couple years, there's been an interesting feed for the crew. It's a fairly nice sounding feed, vocals are pretty high (too high) and panned out, so Bono is 50% to the left, and Edge is 50% to the right. It has clicks and counts like a normal IEM feed, but not too loud. Then it has mixing crew chatter talkback. Earlier in tour and rehearsals, there's a lot of chatter, but they quiet down later in the tour. Overall, it's a decent feed, but the vocals are too high, off-center, and it's a very dry listen.

That said, I've tried to target it for recording because it's a decent feed in case everything else fails. Recently I got some new mixing tools that I thought could help smooth it out. With Seattle being the only US 2017 show I recorded, but didn't mix up, it seemed like a good experiment.

So here you go. It's a single feed, heavily cooked, with a bit of the schoeps audience layered on top. Vocals have been completely releveled, Bono is centered, bass + drums punched up a bit, and then baked in the oven. It's not as good as a full multiple IEM feed mix, which I probably should do for this show, but that's besides the point. If you were only able to get one feed of a show, and taped this feed, I could be happy enough with a final product like this.

Biggest drawback is the crew chatter. I've done some tricks to knock it back 75%, but you'll still hear the crackle and some of the words. It's not often, but at least it doesn't blast your ears anymore.

Anyways, enjoy! It's not a perfect recording, but it's a good listen to my ears. At the very least, I think it's an upgrade of the horribly compressed and misaligned Empress Valley mix.

Thanks to DJ Soulless for bagging the feed, Zummo for scrubbing most of the programmed counts, and phofstee for the schoeps audience!"
  11. I've listened to IEM recordings so much that now I even find myself doing them in my head even at a real show

    "BAND, 2, 3, 4..." "BONO, 2, 3, 4..."
