1. I know what that residual high frequency sound is from. Basically, I zapped the clicks, but don't go quite as aggressive on the upper harmonics of the clicks. What you're seeing there is remnants of the click. I'm ok with the trade-off of getting rid of 90% of the click, but leaving most of the cymbals intact. If you remove more of the click, then you start really taking out a lot of other stuff.

I personally hated the Empress Valley release. The two IEM feeds are not aligned correctly, creating a flangey effect on Bono's vocals. Then they crank the noisy audience on top, which again was not aligned that well.

[technical talk] U2 has different mixer boards for different feeds, and each have different effects on certain channels. Effects cause a little bit of latency and delay, but it's so small that the band doesn't notice on stage. However, if you are mixing feeds, then you'll have things out of alignment. Even if feeds are recorded to the same recorder at the same time, the feeds will still be off by a bit. It gets even more fun when certain components of the feeds are out of sync. So if you align on the drums between Bono and Edge's IEM feed, then the vocals are out of sync. Compromises have to be made, and I personally align on the vocals, and out of sync vocals create a horrible tunnel flange sound that's intolerable. The Empress Valley mixers had no idea about these issues, and just took two feeds, set levels, and export. So things are significantly out of sync.[/technical talk]

I would personally rank the EV a 2 or 2.5 stars because of the phasing issues, which make it unlistenable to me. But I'm very sensitive to stuff like that. My mix was an experiment, and not intended to be as good as some of the other 2017 mixes I've done. Different formula and all that.

On the vocals--I wish I hadn't already archived the files, or I'd post a clip as an example. The original feed had vocals (especially edge) way way higher. Part of my remix was bringing them to a more appropriate level, but that's to my personal taste.

Crew chatter interference was just part of the game on this feed. I have recordings from later in the tour (and this tour) where they're quiet the whole show. The crew chatter was REALLY loud in the original.

@drogba29--I'm currently working on one of the 2018 later European shows for a friend, but my next project goals are Oakland 2001 and Anaheim 2011. I had released Anaheim 2011, so yes, looking to upgrade the workflow/mix.

@KenScott--I did not tape Croker 2017, so wouldn't be up to me to release. I remember somebody (who shall go nameless) posted a teaser clip of Bad, but he hasn't been seen around these parts for a while.

@KleWdSide--You're probably talking about the crew intercom chatter. 90% of it has been removed but there's still some of the crackle of their intercom.

    Ditto here. Thanks Hoserama

Sharebear, it sounds great from the samples I have heard. I understand what you were doing and I think the criticism is a product of your own outstanding work in the past. Don't let the Bastard grind you down! lol
My "simple" solution to this with past crew feeds was to align the Edge feed and bring up Bono's vocals slightly on that feed. The transition was almost seamless as long as it is not a ton of crew chatter. I'm sure you have the Edge feed (and many others) and were just trying to stick to one feed as your goal though (but that would bring it to two feeds and mainly one! ).
This recording sounds better than 95% of the shows out there to me. I'm the opposite of a lot of people. I cannot listen to audience stuff unless there is an IEM/ALD mixed in with it. I'm with you on the phasing also! I can't stand it! Hurts my ears. When I playback some of my old remastering and I can't listen to it because of just a little bit of phasing here and there and my audio ear was different back then. Need to go back and correct it and re do a lot of it. But do not have the time to do all of it. Many projects, so little time. I know you understand that!
  4. Hoseramas recording is the best. Imo

Remind me to show you the spatial extraction trick on the crew feed--you can do a cleaner extraction of Bono's vocals to layer into the Edge feed, and then you don't crank the Edge vocals.

But yeah, different tastes and all. And then not enough time on projects! I really should do a full mix of Seattle that would be similar to the Vancouver 2017 mix two nights further...but meh, moved onto other projects already.
  6. Thanks hindutimes01!!
