Joshua Tree Tour 2019
Legs (1): New Zealand, Australia and Asia
Shows: 15

  1. Very much doubt it. Dates are said to be Fri 22nd and Sat 23rd, so a third show would most likely be on a Monday or Tuesday. The local residents won't go for it and I expect the council wouldn't approve it. [Can't believe they've approved the first two mind you]
  2. Strange all round is all I can say, I’m just throwing guesses out there. There must be a specific reason though to play SCG rather than ANZ, we just might never know for certain. As for the croke Park discussion I can’t make sense of that either, you would have thought 2 nights in Dublin would have made sense.

Some of the locals around Croke park love to object to the amount of concerts held there even though they get free tickets and other sweeteners and choose to live beside one of Europe's biggest stadiums but it was odd that they chose not to play 2 nights however there were a lot of rumours that someone else had provisionally booked the 3rd slot it could have been Ed Sheeran but it never materialized .
  4. In 2010, apparently the 2nd show in Sydney at ANZ Stadium was quite undersold. Apparently they were able to spread out the tickets sold to make it look pretty full, but there were definitely under 50,000 people there. So maybe they are playing it safe. I would think playing the whole Joshua Tree would sell enough tickets, but who knows?

Yes it was 66,000 the first night and 41,000 the second night so that may explain them being cautious this time around.
Apparently the SCG has a capacity of 46-48,000. Once you minus the seats behind the stage and add GA to the field it could be 55-60,000.

Record capacity for SCG for a concert was 45,191 for the Waveaid charity gig held in January 2005. A couple of stands have been replaced and the capacity increased slightly since then but that still won't result in a crowd anywhere near 55-60,000. Whatever is gained by having GA on the field will lost from seating behind the stage in a round stadium, unless they're bringing back The Claw.

After all the wear and tear the ground is experiencing this year due to increased usage as a consequence of Allianz being closed, I struggle to see how they would agree to have it covered and stomped on by a music crowd less than 6 weeks out from the Test against Pakistan starting on 3rd January.

Yeah, I'd looked up this stuff last night, & was planning on writing it.

I'd mistakenly thought that the 360 box score of 115,000 for Sydney was for the first show, & thought the total for the 2 shows was around 200,000. Which would be similar to the 200,000 tickets they sold over the 3 shows on the Vertigo tour. But the 115,000 for 360 was indeed over the 2 shows.

So the total attendance for 360 in Sydney was only just over half what it was for Vertigo! Even with that spectacular CLAW. A bit of a shock to me, I didn't know their numbers had fallen so much. They've certainly lost quite a bit of relevance here!

So I guess they feel that 2 shows at the SCG, with a maximum capacity of nearing 100,000 must be just about right.

Anyway, I'm happy to go to a concert there, instead of the usual tramp out to Homebush.

It's only Pakistan, nobody will be watching It's sure the Pakistani spinners will love a scuffed up pitch.

Seriously, I'm just as surprised as you to see any concert at the SCG, particularly in the cricket season. If anything, I thought there'd even be more chance of using that brand new stadium in Parramatta, although they'd need 3 shows there, as it's capacity is only 30,000.
  9. Agree, the new Parramatta stadium would have been less surprising as an alternative. Guess we'll know the facts in about 12 hours or so.
  10. I would be quite surprised if it turns out to be the SCG in Sydney (i am from there). But i will respect the current rumours. Just makes no sense from a capacity perspective and also from the perspective of local community and fragility of venue over cricket season. I don’t really know how easy it is to pull out or drop in a cricket pitch, but with an international match ~3 weeks earlier i dunno.? Would be really interesting, if it is the case, why ANZ is not the go-to venue for U2.
  11. I would have dismissed the SCG rumour as an error were it not supported by @U2wanderer1. Given he's been the source of so much reliable chatter, however, I'm trusting it but very confused as to why that choice.
  12. So potentially we should hear news in what, 14-18 hours?
