First of all, I'm sorry for my absence on this round table. I became really burnt out and it became more of a job to me. Even during my own choice for the Reggio PopMart show. I hope this makes up for it.
Moderator’s Notes:
1997-09-20 - Reggio Emilia, Italy - Festival Site
General Jots:
--Mofo was fine... although lacking in the drums!
--Even Better and Until the End of the World sound a bit forced.
--New Year's Day was forced.
--Staring at the Sun was half-hearted.
--Volare was fun and Miami was the best song of the night.
--What is up with Discothèque? It was just garbled.
--Bass mistake in Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me.
--Guitar mistake in One... and WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED TO LARRY?!?!?
Final Thoughts:
Listening to this show makes me think of why I have problems with the Pop era. It was impersonal, even to the band. The performance reminded me of '66 era Beatles where they could barely hear themselves, so they provided only the minimum of care to the show. It makes me sad and I plan to forget.![]()
---
So for my greater good, I won't be around for the round table unless I feel up for it. So... Gerard, Nate, and Dan... look on the front page. I left something for you.![]()
Originally posted by germcevoyi'll do a summary topic tonight. Note though that not all the shows listed will be upgrades so unless your a bootleg nerd (like me) then you might not give a crap but it's an issue I care about. Maybe one day i'll have all 1000 bootlegs sourced

Sound
[..]
This wasn't a 5 star recording as it was originally listed by any means, and was changed to 3.5 after all the reviews were in. No bass, poor drums and fuzzy occasionally. It was very difficult to perceive the crowd also, probably due to the size of the arena, but it was a shame not to be able to hear 150000 screaming Italians very much
Performance
This was a popular show with reviewers. Everyone found something to enjoy, and it is a solid concert performance all round. Certainly shows the Popmart naysayers how wrong they are.
Highlights:-
EBTTRT - "Ciao Reggio. Viva Italia...., viva Popmart, ... viva..... Bono!" B-Man on top form
Mofo - very good:-
[..]
"Discotheque", "WOWY", "HMTMKMKM" - excellent performances; great encore really, especially:-
"One" - very good performance. None of the extended guitar from early ZooTV, but everything else. And a special 'A Capella' bit where all but Bono and the huge crowd drop away. Fantastic
"Please/Streets" - as normal this was amazing.
Rare Popmart outing for "MLK"
Bono's voice was generally very good, especially compared to the next show (Sarajevo)
Poor bits:-
LNOE dragged and generally didn't meet with favour.
I didn't like the karoake, but others seemed to think it was a bit of fun.
Otherwise, nothing.
Overall
Good listen. Just listen to it in the right circumstances - decent headphones preferably.
There are better (Leeds, Santiago, Mexico, Sarajevo), but this is a solid, recommended 3.5 star listen
