I’m beginning to think the flash was never that dramatic and it was just all those old cameras that got over exposed back in the day.

That definitely had an impact imho. I remember you thinking that many years ago, and someone also arguing (against you) that the flash was actually stronger back in the day, and in fact it was so strong that the lights actually caused some kind of electromagnetic interference/saturation, hence the "high pitch whistle" that can be heard during the flash (it's quite notorious in the Sydney DVD).

That high pitch whistle is piped in from the PA. at least it has been recently. Sounds like an organ. You hear it mistimed occasionally.
In any case the song rocked harder in the old days because they played it faster, louder and heavier. The flash with the cymbals crashing just gave the song a climax point early on that had people lose their shit. It’s a simple formula that they could easily get back to.

Do you suspect or know for a fact the whistle is intentionally launched?

I’ll find some examples. 2015 was bad for it but I have also heard it on more than a couple of 1991 recordings.

Yeah all these 1991 concerts were superb. Specially the one on February 30th.![]()
