Joshua Tree Tour 2019
Legs (1): New Zealand, Australia and Asia
Shows: 15
  1. I think it’s more a case of it looking bad rather than it really being a problem. Remember the first night sold extremely well. The fact they’ve got the numbers to sell any tickets for a 2nd show is a bonus really. It’s not going to cost a lot to put on a 2nd show given the equipment is already there so they’ll probably still make a good bit of money in a half empty stadium. If first nights were half empty then that would be a problem.

That's correct. I agree that equipment is already there... But we have only 5 sold out out of 15 dates. Some of the shows are selling slowly, see Perth, Seoul, Mumbai… And we are so close to the tour. In Italy 2017, 2 dates, each with 80.000 people capacity, were sold in minutes. And coming back to Auckland, it is not Olimpic Stadium in Rome or Wembley. It's smaller. Not to be able to fill a second show in a country (apparently second show sold less than half capacity) is a bad signal. A normal band would cancel show 2.

I don’t think they’d want to look bad by cancelling the second show due to poor ticket sales.

And they can’t blame “logistical reasons” because they’re already there the night before?

They never cancelled the Tampa show in 1997.
  4. So long as the tour still goes ahead, I don't mind a half-empty stadium.

I don't agree, renting a stadium for a second night costs maybe more than what you save by having the equipment already there. For example, Olympic Stadium in Rome costs 250k euros a night. Even if Auckland stadium would be cheaper, still it won't be for free. I think it's a problem.

I agree. Infact I said a normal band would cancel it, but not them…. But I think we all agree that sales are not optimal as maybe we could expect. And this is sad for me.

The band have sold maybe around 16k tickets for a 2nd night in Auckland probably averaging around £100 each thats £1.6million and the venue is likely to be a lot less to hire than the Olympic stadium in Rome.

Seoul has sold well, Perth is a large venue and has also sold well. Even Mumbai has sold perfectly well for a new location for the band. With the prices that are being charged sell outs aren’t required and probably aren’t budgeted for either, good sales doesn’t have to mean a sell out. Auckland 2 is the only shambles sales wise and they’ll still make a fortune of it.

Maybe you have access to info that I don't have about the number of tickets sold, their average price, the venue cost and how much a single U2 show must cash to break even. What I pointed out is that a second night costs, regardless the equipment being there.

16k tickets? Have you been smoking, Dean?
  11. You don’t think they’ve sold 16k tickets? In the Auckland thread the person who counted how many available worked it out to be over 8k unsold seats, there’s 30k seats in the stadium but I would think at least 5k would be disregarded because of the stage set up so that would work out around 16k plus GA tickets sold so far.
