  2. The live versions of SOE are less boring than on the album, but in general I still think SOE is a boring and average U2 album. Apart from The little things and Book of your heart.
  3. So I have a friend that is interested in getting into U2 and asked me where to start. First of all, I love it!

    Wondering, though, what others’ thoughts are on what to recommend he begin with. The reason I’m posting in the SOE thread is I’m actually thinking that having him start with both SOI and SOE might be a good idea. To me, at least, starting with their most recent work (which taken together I’d argue is their best in 20 years) and working backward makes sense. Thematically these albums are also a great summary of their career arc up to the present.

    Then, suggesting he listen to JT and Achtung back to back = their best two albums and their most dramatic reinvention.

    Then, if he’s hooked, go back all the way to Boy and move through them all chronologically.

    Bad idea? Good idea? Start instead with more radio-friendly stuff from ATYCLB / HTDAAB?
  4. I would not recommend to start with SOE. He will fell a sleep. Start with JT and AB.

    Always JT to start. It has the stuff he will have heard before as well as some blinders like Exit that he won't. JT is bang in the middle so he can work back towards Boy to see where it started or into the 90's to see where it went.
  6. SOE, the studio versions, are terrible. It would be a bad first impression.
  7. Haha, fair enough. I still like SOE quite a bit more than SOI, production elements and all, but I like Ger’s suggestion above of starting with JT and then he can either work backward or forward. Thanks!

    If he knows nothing about U2, I would start with 18 singles and/or both best of albums.
