1. 12 years to the day!
  2. The Kite from that show is the best I've heard. The fact that his voice cracks is what makes it. Powerful emotion there.

Hearing a perfect version can be quite dull. Why listen to multiple shows if you just wanna hear them perform perfectly? The interest is in the variance.

Not only does Bona pour himself into Kite, but so does Edge. Guitar is crackling...

Slane is dece, as many have said it's emotional, the songs are solid, and the setlist is solid. However, I wouldn't say it's Bono's best. There are times when his voice falls short, and am I the only one who has noticed Bono pronounced his words a bit differently on the elevation tour? It's always bothered me, I can't describe it or give an example but when he sings some of the words he says them differently, and he mumbles way too damn much in between songs or lyrics. I still think Sunday Bloody Sunday here is freakin' phenomenal, up there with red rocks. If you take away the "show" itself, it's a decent performance, not one of Bono's best IMO.

  4. Sorry I can’t find an out of control thread when I type it in the search bar. ‘500 pounds’ absolutely beautiful part of the show during out of control. Coming from a multi millionaire who remembered where he came from how he got started, knew that without the upbringing he had might not have been in a position that he was now , same for the rest of the band. It’s one of the most touching moments of any u2 gig. ‘500 pounds’.
  5. Just my opinion, but sometimes the emotion or voice cracks for whatever reason make the performance better than just hitting the notes perfectly like a studio recording. For example my favorite version of Elevation is the Boston one where he is still recovering from his cold and his voice cracks a few times. I love that. It makes it unique and I often sing the cracks in my own voice no matter which version i am singing along to. I do similar things with some of his ad-libs or lyric changes. I listen to live recordings so much that it becomes ingrained in my memory so when i hear versions without it my brain automatically fills it in.

    I am probably just weird...

+1, I love that speech to bits. Years ago I even edited a studio version of OOC with an extra long bridge so I could do the Slane speech over it

Our friend Harry remembered the speech yesterday on twitter, in a slightly different mood though:

You are not weird... if live we would get a perfect clean versions it wouldn’t make sense...

Emotions play huge part in U2 shows being as good as they are ...

say I like or even love Muse shows, they are way better musicians, the shows are on same level when it comes to special effects BUT

Emotions wise it’s nowhere near U2 show

And to my humble self Slane still stands as a best U2 show document (it’s not about the show... zoo is better... it’s not about image quality... as Boston is way better... it’s about those little things ... a goal, an Irish flag, a beach ball, voice cracks, Bob, Eve etc.)

Ps One in Mexico97 with Bono shaky voice is also up there you can feel the emotions

That’s what make U2 the best
  8. Slane September 1st, 2001 was special it all felt so intimate - I remember a beautiful night with everyone in such joyous mood - we were on top of the world a world that was turned upside down only 10 days later when on 9/11 many of us at that time lost our own innocence. There was life before 9/11 and a whole new reality afterwards. Slane DVD is very special indeed.

From the same reasons I like Red Flag Day from Berlin 1st September, really ...
Surely Bono's voice problems don't make this performance better or something that but his struggles with inability to sing turns the song into more dramatic, impressive, truly emotional, weird live version. After over dozen times to hear that unfortunately performance I can say I love it!
    Something wrong with me ??

I think you're right. Trouble or a setback can sometimes get him to give an extra 20% in his performance. But I guess that only works if he turns that frustration into something positive (which he's done a lot of times).

But if it's just frustration it can make things worse. This other time when his voice left him (Amsterdam '89) he tried to "force through" that, making things worse..

Voice cracks are one thing... his voice being so bad that he can't continue is another, lol
  12. I still cringe whenever I hear that bit from God part II from Amsterdam '89. He's so frustrated that he calls the band to have another go at the high screaming part to try and "make it up". After that song the voice is completely gone..
