1. at first i didn't like the album at all the only song i liked was staring at the sun and discotheque
but when i saw the popmart shows in rotterdam ....i start to like the album more and more .
when the best of came out from 1990 until 2000 and i hear the new versions of pop
i thought wow!!! that's the way i like it
but prefer the live versions above the studio versions ....
  2. Interesting this topic came up, as Pop is my current favorite. JT and AB are still my all-time favorites though. It's such a shame they couldn't work some of those songs out live, such as Do You Feel Loved?, IGWSHA, etc...I would love to hear this album completely re-worked. Not going to happen, unfortunately...

  4. Not bad. Just unfinished. Why do you think they play/played most of the songs off it in diffrent ways?

Because they didn't like the album versions, because they were unfinished.
  6. Exactly, and thats how the band learned never commit to a tour until your albums done.

They played many of the songs off POP differently as the complexity of the arrangement insisted as such.

Sure some arrangement of any song can change over time and preference for the newer ideas, sounds and methods that one might find. But in many cases, with U2, the live arrangement might vary from the album as it is hard to recreate some of the studio 'magic' live.

In that, many songs benefit from this form of re-arranging. "The Unforgettable Fire" and "A Sort of Homecoming" being two examples.

  10. There's a charm to Pop due to the raw feel to it, and for most heavy music fans it is generally highly appreciated (no less amongst U2's heaviest fans). 'Rolling Stone' magazine gave it a very good review. But Pop should rightfully be looked down as a disappointment - in 'Please' and 'IGWSHA' there was the potential for the next 'One'. Then there is the general high quality of 'Staring...', 'Discotheque' 'Gone', 'Wake Up','IYWTVD' - these songs could of and should of been huge amongst a casual fan base. Unlike movies to an extent, great albums will nearly always be defined on how much they can affect a casual fan. Great ideas but not executed properly and believe it or not I am a huge fan of Pop.
  11. I loved POP from the time it first came out.But i think it was actually ahead of it's time, when you listen to it now it sounds like it's current.I also agree with the fact that the songs from the album work better live.I'd love to see them bring a song or two back to the live shows.
  12. U2 forgot who they were with this album and tried to be something they were not : a dance/pop band a lot of the songs were of little substance and didnt have the strength that previous songs had, however Gone DYFL Mofo and please will always be the standout tracks for me and have stood the test of time,Interesting that they dont play any of the songs now live The problem with the Popmart tour was that they didnt change the setlist enough and were relying on a lot of the songs from Pop to carry them through the tour whic lets face it were below par.
