I think a lot of people just like it because it’s a great album. It’s only a minority of fans that don’t rate it as highly and it’s usually on die hard fan sites. When I look at the world I think is a great song. And I don’t know how people can compare grace and wild honey with U2’s worst stuff. Meh, it's subjective, but your last point doesn't really add up. I don't think a fan, in U2's case, would randomly dislike the album just because it's "too mainstream".

I think it being too mainstream does bother a lot of fans. Its almost as if ‘yeah right as if stuck in a moment is better than Sunday Bloody Sunday’ it is imo but older fans won’t think so and I think it annoys or baffles them that a new generation of fan could like the newer material over the older stuff.
