    Exactly it’s that kind of mindset right there as if how is stuck better than SBS. People almost jumping on the bandwagon of the earlier stuff is better and not even giving the new stuff a chance. I wouldn’t put SBS in my top 50 u2 songs, I like it but I prefer songs like Babyface, when I look at the world, California. But I think ATYCLB particularly annoys fans because a ‘new song’ is being seen as so popular when it’s ‘not as good as the old stuff’.
    I would honestly love to find one person who had been following the band since the 80s to establish if the ATYCLB songs irked them at the time because it might be just as popular as the old stuff but adamant that it's not as good. I just don't get that mentality at all.

  5. I don’t think it’s necessarily an old fan vs young fan thing with ATYCLB. There’s plenty of older fans on here that really like the album but I think you’ll find those fans are more likely to be the ones that never really got into Pop. On the other hand, you have fans like Alvin who wanted more Pop and was left disappointed by ATYCLB.

    The one things that absolutely baffles me about the album though is that it was released 20 years ago. It is as far away now as Boy was then.

    I don’t think they would admit that’s the reasoning but I think it’s a set in there way mentality. Just like people turned away from the band after the change of direction with AB they did the same with the change to ATYCLB, one was a move to a more experimental direction and one was a move to a more basic sound for what had came before it anyway. I’m sure some people have went into every album with an open mind but I really do believe a lot of people go into things with a closed mind at times and I think the band releasing an album in 2000 that had a lead single like beautiful day that was getting played on the radio and music channels all the time and gaining the band some significant praise would have bothered a few of the fans that got into the band in the early days before they were the big superstars they became and would have bothered the 90’s fans who wanted constant experiment after experiment. But the whole reason the band are who they are and where they’ve got to is because they have changed direction and I don’t think every fan has been open minded enough to accept that change.

    Yeah you’re probably right it isn’t just an old vs new fan thing although I think that comes into it. I would say most people that would pick boy, October, war and TUF over ATYCLB and HTDAAB would be the older generation of fans. But there’s also just taste that comes into it regardless of age. Anyway everyone’s allowed to like and dislike an album I just think more later album suffer from an unfair bias against them because of fans that had supported the band from the beginning having an idea of what they think the band should be doing rather than being open minded to what they actually did and the earlier albums won’t have suffered this same bias because there wasn’t this expectation of what they want from the band.

    I remember reaction to ATYCLB being similar to HTDAAB as far as the internet U2 fandom goes.

    As for mainstream, i should think they were in 1987.

    Also 1992. Honestly, their popularity was high and in the mainstream during Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, ATYCLB, and HTDAAB I feel.

    The shift from Joshua tree/Rattle& Hum to Achtung baby was colossal they lost a lot of fans from the 80s people who followed them because of their political messages and Christian themed songs, I know a lot of people who stopped listening to them after Bono started wearing his fly goggles they just couldn't take him seriously anymore ,now obviously it was a well calculated move and they knew exactly what they were doing as they were tired of playing the self righteous and pompous Rock band and wanted to have fun with it ,with ALTYCLB they did get some of the deserters back as the album was a return to more familiar ground and the tunes were more direct and melodic.
