I don't recall seeing, hearing or reading of Edge using an ME-5. I will have to look into that a bit more.

Is it a rackmount unit? A floorboard multi-effects unit? Piccy's?
  3. a floarboard effect processor

Sounds cool. If it is by Boss, chances are that it will have overdrive sounds like the SD-1 and OD-2 (both of which The Edge has used).

I'm pretty sure that the OD-2 was the overdrive that The Edge used for "Until The End of The World" on the album and the Zoo through Elevation tours.

The SD-1 was there for the ZOO and (I think) Popmart tours. It was replaced by the Ibanez Tubescreamer during Elevation.

But the Tubescreamer is sooooo weak...I can't understand why someone with valve amps uses these pedals.

Tubescreamers are not so weak. And Edge's are modified by AnalogMan.com too so they have a bit more range. 75% of Edge main overdrive (per Dallas) is the Tubescreamer. He's got the custom rack mount Line 6 distortion modeler, Sobbat and Big Muff for more extreme sounds.

It sounded weak when I plyed throught it...but it was at the guitar shop.
But why valves if the overdrive comes from the pedals?

Because good syrup on shit waffles is still shit stale freezer-burned frozen waffles.

Now good warmed yummy syrup on good homemade waffles... THAT is good eatin'.

Good tone with a good valve amp gives good tone with a rich body. Solid state? It's worse than frozen waffles.

With Edge, the Vox is his basic tone and then it's coloured from there. It's good homemade cookin' from the start. The Tubescreamer is the main added flavor... that and then some delay, other overdrives / distortion / etc... then it's like homemade waffles with good yummy heated syrup with a touch of melted butter in it PLUS strawberrys and fresh whip cream.

Make sense? Damn, anyone else hungry?

PS - Tubescreamer is great. Either the TS-9 that is modded by Analogman.com or the Ibanez 808 reissue, as those two BOTH have the older style chip. The stock TS-9 isn't as warm and yummy. Maxon makes good OD's that mimic the old 808 - and it should as Maxon originally made those for Ibanez back in the late 1970's... ALSO Visual Sounds "Route 66" is the goods! It's like having a vintage Tubescreamer AND good (read: NOT noisy crap MXR DynaComp reissue - although it can mimic a VINTAGE DynaComp; like Edge's) compressor all in one. You can use JUST the compressor, JUST the OD or both. LOVELY. I have the Route 66 and LOVE it.

MOST IMPORTANT... When testing effects... bring YOUR guitar and play through an amp that is similar to your own (or bring yours). It is the ONLY way to know if that effect will sound good with your gear.

    Rock on, fellow U2 fans!

The knowledge some of you guys have about these things baffles me (especially anstratdubh...). I'm so impressed.
