    Show Notes:
I wasn't there, but folks I know that were there said this show and perhaps Chi2 were the best of the Chicago stand.

    Recording Notes:
I didn't tape it, so can't give too much details. Sounds very clearly to be a Bono stereo IEM mixed with an audience. I heard the original clips, and it wasn't as horrible as I expected it to be, but still sounded subpar to me. Lots of nearby clappers and sibilance (harsh -ess sound on vocals). Bono likes his high-end in the cans. Whoever did the original mix also cranked the limiter too much; not much that can be recovered off that. Dynamics are a good thing, people! Sounds like it was aligned and basic levels set--the quieter songs sound like a different IEM to Aud ratio compared to the louder songs.

Now, this still not a great recording in my opinion. But with a little spit and polish, I do think it's a bit better. I'd give the original a C- grade, while I'd give it a B- now. Some say I'm a tough grader.

Work done...zapping loud claps, de-esser (but sometimes excessive sibilance left some distortion), low end boost, mono out the low-end.

'Remastering' this show also breaks some of my usual protocols, particularly working on a show that has already been mastered. Naturally, it'd be better to go to the original sources sitting in the closet and do my own mix. But since this one is already out there, maybe put a little polish out there to smooth out some of the harshness without a ton of work. Then I'll go back to my other projects.

Anyways, hope its an improvement for folks. If not, delete it.

Thanks for deffu2 for picking up a copy, sharing, and giving the go-ahead for the remaster.

No restrictions on this, except don't sell (amusing considering the source).

  2. Two topics?
  3. Eric: many thanks for your links. Maybe next time you can submit a new recording directly to us and you can improve your torrent ratio here, so win/win.
I'm reopening this thread, because the links for the actual remaster are here. The other thread is the recording we already have.
  4. Anyone has the cover art of this japanese bootleg?
  5. Thanks for this! Several years ago our band switched to IEM's and for a while we felt disconnected from the audience. The solution was to mix some of the crowd noise back into the IEM feed. This may explain why you are hearing the audience in this feed. The crowd does sound a bit loud and the counting cues (I suspect to make sure they sync with video cues) and the count in's a little quiet but each to their own. I was surprised BTW how few timing cues and backing tracks there were. Would love a few IEM's of this tour with Edge's feed!

the counts have nothing to do with video, should you listen and check at the same time it's just to tell them when to start playing certain musical parts of the song.

Edge's feed on this tour isn't the best one to listen on its own, Bono's feed is the best listen to for a 'one feed' production, as this "matrix". Edge's feed on the previous tour had two completely separate audio on each channel, one with click-track + counts and one without, it's not the same anymore, he now has click-track and counts are on both channels of the stereo imaging. If you were to record a single iem feed this tour i would recommend Bono's feed; if you want to run multiple recordings on a night then do every single one but Bono.
  7. I believe that the counts serve multiple purposes - 1. Help them switch tempos - you can here one where they end the son got and then the new fast count comes in and they launch off 2. Sorry, but even shows our band play in, it does help stay synced to the video / lights / production / people coming on stage etc. with all the times lights, video etc. it seems doubtful that they would not use the IEM's to keep them cued up to the production, backing tracks and each other. 3. (Tongue in cheek) it keeps Bono's speeches short - he will start I to a speech and then the count comes in and he has to move it on!

I have no problems with the count ins being on both channels - as guitarist I would still love the Edge's IEM feeds as I get to hear his playing better than on the other feeds.
  8. Listen to the feeds. There are no prompts telling the band where to be on stage or what's coming up on screen. It's all about timing. Getting the intros right and into the choruses on time.
