    I disagree, when u2 are as successful and financially well off as they are they can do whatever they want with there music and schedule. They are in a strong enough position to go against contracts if they wish and promote there own brand. I'm not saying every idea is there's but if they weren't on board with it they wouldn't need to do it.
    Going against a binding co tract leads to legal fees. And with another equitable entity, lots of legal fees. Why would they pay out when it's easier to play some shows and make money instead of paying it....

    They did have their own merch ops for years. Then decided it would be easier to sign a deal to have someone else deal with it.

    So, whether this tour is "contract obligation" or just a timely distraction from SOE... they are still legally bound partners with Live Nation...
