1. I think whatever the band plays tonight won't sound like either of the versions, unless they'll be playing along with a track (definitely maybe). It'll probably sound like a stripped down version of the song.

This is exactly how I feel about it today. To me it's unabashed joyous because of the clumsiness, almost care-free.

Re-listened to the sci-fi mix and today that sounded like the more safe, albeit more boring choice to me
  7. Just listened to the Sci Fi mix and it feels much cleaner and more suited for radio play. A good in-between of the single and kygo mix, really what I thought the song would sound like after hearing the kygo version. I'm confused that they'd even bother to release that messy single version if this was a choice, or at least make the single version a bonus track/b-side. The band works in mysterious ways...

    Yyyyyyep.

The Sci-Fi mix isn't a "safer" version because it's more put together lol, the same way the "single" version isn't more "risky" or "creative" because it's all over the place arrangement and mix-wise, it's messy. I'm actually surprised that people aren't finding the Sci-Fi version more divisive, it's littered with synths here and there and odd little sounds, it's totally more of a "PRODUCTION" than the single version.

This is how I feel anyway.

I know what you mean, and the agree that it's more of a production. But The Best Thing is structurally and lyrically a very pop song so I don't mind getting a very pop mix since that naturally plays up the strengths of the song.

I'm mostly glad they dropped the guitar in the Sci Fi mix because something that gritty had no place in a song this bubbly. There's always going to be people that prefer a more "rock" sound or version of a song even if it means a more disoriented mix because for some reason people get hung up on genres. I'm not ashamed to say pop can be better than rock!

I don't care if its Pop, Rock, whatever, as long as it's good, and as long as it's within reasonable means for U2 to "do".

I like the synths in the sci-fi mix, but yeah, both versions have their ups and downs. I think if the single mix sounded better on the production side (not necessarily in their choice of how heavy the guitar is, etc.) I'd be completely fine with that version. It still sounds like a demo to me or something. It's flat, the mix never "takes off".
