Experience and Innocence tour
Legs (3): Promo tour, Leg 1: North America, Leg 2: Europe
Shows: 75
  1. The E&I tour is a bit like SOE, just average.
I can understand the number of songs and the concept but no rotation at back to back shows, is quit insulting for the fans and easy-going of the band.
This also should be boring for themselves, I can't believe this tour is interesting for them.

I was so angry after the two nights at Wembley POPMART when they rotated those Elvis and The Monkees covers... grrr, you boring band I thought, how dare you insult us like this. Don’t mention those Zooropa/Zoomerang/New Zooland shows... jeez, it was like a 1966 Beatles record burning session around those parts I bet.
  3. I can see why they went with the same setlist for the first 3 nights they were off the road for 2 months probably wanted no hiccups apart from what happened in Berlin and adding NYD, EBTTRT and RFD was a big shake up by their standards as the tour progresses they will definitely add different songs. 4 night's in Dublin with the same setlist would be a national scandal and they know it the people that love/hate them the most will expect a bit of variation.
  4. It is true that Zoo TV and Popmart also have a lack of rotation, but that was 20-25 years ago. The release of JT was just 4-11 years ago. So most songs are fresh those days.
SInce then we have another 5 U2 records. And U2 still plays the same songs next to new album tracks and this tour even they ignore the best tracks of SOE.
  5. I’d be interested to know how many people are seeing multiple shows as a percentage of the whole audience. Obviously data would be hard to come by but hypothetically:

They are playing 32 dates on this leg, average arena size is what 15k? (I don’t know) but for arguments sake - that’s 480,000 tix sold (it’s pretty much a sell out tour as far as I can tell) - so how many of those 480,000 are seeing more than 1 show?

I reckon out of 480,000 tickets only around half of those are attending a single show only. 240,000 people attending 1 show and then maybe 100,000 people going to multiple shows. 340,000 different people buying 480,000 tickets sounds about right to me.

Well, they are not playing any JT. Normally those songs are part of it. So it is a bold move to not play anything from their most successful album. Yet, some people here are pissed they are not playing some of them. They can't win.

It was 20-25 years ago. Look even further back at Boy, October, War and Unf. Fire setlists. There is not a ton of variation. In fact the basic setlist is the same for the most part for each of those tours (with the occasional setlist mix up). U2 were not rotating and playing tons of songs even in their prime. Why do we expect rotation from a band that has never been much for setlist rotation? They have made some efforts on a few of the more recent tours, but even then, the basic songs and setlist were very similiar with very little variation for each leg of those tours.

U2 have always worked this way. Why do some of you expect different when they are in their late 50's?
  8. I don’t know if it’s a song quality thing as well. Maybe people were happy to accept hearing pride, Streets, WOWY because even though they got played most of the time they were generally considered great songs. I don’t think vertigo and elevation can really be considered great songs and the version of SBS they are playing isn’t to a lot of people’s liking either. I know rotation and song selection are two separate things but I feel like if they were playing SBS like it was on TJT tour and ditched elevation and vertigo for Streets and WOWY the Setlist would be better received. (Not necessarily in the same place in the set as elevation and vertigo).
  9. Taking my example above say we swap this version of SBS for the normal version and after the intermission the Setlist went like this

    EBTTRT
    Acrobat
    Best Thing
    Summer Of Love
    Pride
    GOOYOW
    New Years Day
    COBL
    WOWY

    Encore
    Streets
    One
    Love Is Bigger
    13

Much better with just some subtle changes.

I think a lot of it is how it looks on paper. As a diehard I agree that I'm tired of Elevation and Vertigo. But when you are actually there the place goes apeshit when they play them and I have found myself enjoying them as a result. JT is my favorite U2 album and I think Streets should always be played. But I give them credit for not playing anything from the album. Song selection? They are playing Acrobat! That is for the diehards completely! The casuals have no idea what that song even is.

I do agree on SBS. They must enjoy playing it that way. I have no idea why. They are artists and it is their vision and art. They have license to do what they want with it. As fans we can criticize but if it bothers people so much, don't go to the shows. You are the consumer. Make them change by not buying tickets!

I'm sure the usual suspects (i.e. the U2 mafia) will be there at the majority of concerts this leg.
