Goes as follows: a taper spends a few hundred (or thousand, as you very well know) bucks in gear, and it takes dozens of hours and gigs to master the technique and become used to the gear. Then, the taper riskily sneaks the recording gear into the venue, does their best looking for the best sounding location within the venue, records, edits and shares the recording...
Only to find that a crappy sounding 128kbps mixlr rip was uploaded a few hours (or days) before, so her/his recording goes unnoticed for 90% of the bootleg's potential audience. It's discouraging and I perfectly understand why more and more tapers are taking their time to share the recordings – or just not doing it altogether.
yes, that's true, and also youtube plays it's part of course. It's a different world now and the 'magic' of those 'bootleg' recordings and collecting them seems to be gone. At least for me

It's gone for me too. I still tape (and will keep on doing it for the rest of my concert-going life) mostly for personal enjoyment and for being able to relive the shows I attend, but I rarely upload anything anymore. And when I do, it's usually the full concert recording poured onto Youtube as you say. It seems to be the most widely consumed format nowadays so... why not join the trends instead of trying to fight them?

Here are a few of the shows I've taped in the past years. I am rather sure that they've been watched by at least twice more fans than would have downloaded them if I had uploaded them the "classical way". Sad but probably true.

I agree with you. I am sitting on god knows how many recordings of U2 made of some pretty good gear and they have never seen the light of day anywhere because of exactly what you state. The accessibility of recordings of lesser quality seems to appease a majority. A lot of what i record is for my own enjoyment and memories of gigs all over the world.
