It’s true it doesn’t matter really I just think it’s well wide of the mark to suggest it will be anywhere near 80% full come show time but we’ll find that out soon enough. People are certainly entitled to that opinion and it could technically still happen against all that seems probable, so I’ll just say again we’ll see what happens.

well, I remember Rotterdam 97 and Barcelona 2009. Both 2nd shows on a tour or leg opener and they didn't look like selling out at all.. I remember I could still pick up additional GA's on the post office for Rotterdam 2 shortly before the show and Barcelona also still had plenty of choice in all seats categories. In the end both shows looked even more packed than the previous night. But we'll see if the same applies to Auckland. For now, based on those seatmaps I think it doesn't look that bad. I would say at least 60% is already gone.

AGAIN it doesn't matter whether it's sold out or half full they will use it to iron out any glitches, Auckland has always proved difficult to sell out 2 nights so they obviously knew that when adding another gig and will use it to perfect the show.

Yes it doesn’t matter but I’m still entitled to disagree with someone’s view about how full the show will be.

true, but the 2nd shows are the easiest to make money. So I'm sure they would like them to sell well. I doubt it's only there to iron out any glitches. Joshua Tree 2017 and E&I started with single shows.
  6. Let's hope they only invited worldwide press to see and cover the show in Brisbane and not earlier

It's only 15 gigs so they need to be up to speed very quickly and they haven't played live as a band this year so doing 2 nights in the first city of the tour allows them to adjust the show or road test a few different songs alongside TJT.
  8. I'm hoping for a Vertigo Tour 5th leg situation here and they absolutely belt this tour out of the park... that 5th Vertigo leg was only 13 shows but it was a show they were already super familiar with and were coming off a what I would call "medium" sized break (8 months for Vertigo, 12 months for JT19). And as we all know the 5th leg of that Vertigo tour was incredible!

I know that in this case the tour prior was a completely different one and the break a few months longer but they will still have JT17 firm in the their minds.

it's also only 15 shows to get in some money.. I don't think they need more than a couple of rehearsals.. first nights are always a bit tense, but apart from that on recent tours they always seems to be right up to speed. I think Seattle, the 2nd show on JT30 was considered as one of the best of the tour.

Yeah, I thought Vertigo Oz was very good. Enjoyed Sunday Bloody Sunday, with the coexist theme. Thought the "Jesus, Jew, Mohammed, it's true...." bit was a bit rubbish on the Chicago DVD, but they'd sorted it out by Sydney. I still hum it sometimes now, so obviously effected me.

Same with Popmart. Gets knocked for the unrehearsed US leg, but was a cracking show in Sydney.

Let's hope it's the same again, & the band it well rested, energetic & on fire!
  11. I can't believe how poorly rehearsed they were on Popmart. I've listened to a lot of those early bootlegs, and it didn't get better until they were pretty much done with the first US leg. But it wasn't just the new songs. I was listening to the Columbus show I attended, and they actually fucked up "I will follow" so bad that they had to stop and restart the song. You'd think they could play that song in their sleep. I've also heard versions from that era of Pride and ISHFWILF that they legitimately screwed up, and again, they had played those 2 hundreds of times. Things probably seemed bleak then... album wasn't performing well, the shows were poor selling, AND they weren't playing well either.

They've had the occasional hiccups the first nights of other tours, but nothing like Popmart, where they essentially sucked for a month. Zoo TV, Elevation, Vertigo, 360, IE/EI, JT17 all started off pretty well, and improved from there. I imagine they'll be sounding pretty good in Auckland next Friday. Bono will flub some lyrics, but that's any gig.

Seems like every track performed live during the PopMart tour had an additional elements of production - whether it was programmed drums or other electronics. Perhaps it took some getting used to. I liked the heavy bass line on "Bullet The Blue Sky" on that tour.
