Read the Italian newspapers. In Northern Italy, hospitals are at 200% capacity; 1/5 of the population in certain regions is positive; of those infected, 10% need to be in intensive care, another 10% need oxygen. The virus has the potential to infect at least 50% of the population. The death rate is above 5%. Do the maths, keeping in mind that countries like Italy and France have about 5000 beds in intensive care units. And that many of those are already taken. The whole world isn't shutting down destroying the economy for no reason. If millions or tens of millions are infected, the death rate will go up between 10 and 15% of the population. It will be mass graves, if they can be organised. It's not scare mongering. Just look at the Italian data. And, btw, numbers keep going up exponentially in Italy. So the death toll will go up, too, because hospitals are already full. And wait until it spreads to the South, where the healthcare system is a lot worse than it is in the North. Let's talk again in two months to see if it's hyped. Btw: *I really hope I'm wrong*. I'm locked at home in Austria with two small kids; it's no party. Good luck 'working from home' with a 5 and a 3 yo. For months on end. So, again, I *really hope I'm wrong*.
I have friends in intensive care. My age (42). Death rate in Italy for people my age is about 0.5%. Then it goes up exponentially as you get older. *If we can cure everyone*. If we can't it will probably go up to 1 or 2%.

the real problem here in Italy is that all the people can’t see that the problem is real.it’s not a joke.but people go running...walking....take the bus....the tube...gather in the park....
It seems we have reached the number of deaths that China had....and the Chinese are now few....
We MUST stop thinking for ourselves as the Italians have always done
Me,as an italian,I don’t feel like the rest because I don’t act like the rest.it may seem that I feel like being superior.well,I’m not.but often I think that modt of the people around here are deeply stupid.and,as you say....wait until the disease will reach the south where they haven’t a real organization in “sanity”....I don’t want to think about it because it will be a massacre
We have to collaborate
So STAY HOME
It’s hard?yes it is
But WE MUST

Maybe the next choice would be to get a taxi to the embassy of your friend's home country. There they can surely help along, as tourists are stranded all over the world at the moment, with hotels etc closing down.
Good luck!

Hopefully the USA doesn't have a crisis like Italy, but the initial US response was a joke.
