Actually, it's not impossible that it would work. Some NASA people have said so.
The film is mostly scientifically accurate. The biggest problem it has is the storm in the beginning wouldn't knock the spacecraft over. The atmosphere on Mars is way too thin.

Well, if the atmosphere is so tin there, it might work indeed.
But first they show how a storm can tilt over a huge spacecraft and then duct tape and plastic will hold during similar storms...
